Freshmen aplenty in NECBL ASG

LYNN, Mass.—The New England Collegiate League played its annual all-star game here Wednesday at historic Fraser Field. Two nights later, and less than 10 miles away, the Cape Cod League will stage its all-star contest at venerable Fenway Park in Boston.

Despite the close proximity of the two games, both played in long-standing structures, and the relatively-close geographic proximity of the two New England-based summer college leagues, there are contrasting differences in style and perception between the leagues.

Edenton Breaks CPL Team Single-Season Walks Record

The Edenton Steamers broke the Coastal Plain League single-season walks record Saturday night during a doubleheader with the Petersburg Generals.

Heading into their twin bill, Edenton had 258 walks and needed just five to break the old record of 262 set by Forest City in 2010. In game one, the Steamers got seven walks to break the record and then added another four in the second contest to bring their season total to 269 currently.

Oneonta and Webster reach NYCBL Championship series

The NYCBL championship is set. Webster defeated Geneva 5-2 winning the best of three series 2 games to 1 while Oneonta defeated Utica 7-1 winning their best of three series 2 games to 0.

Three-peat: Big Train top Redbirds in Finals

The scene is awfully familiar: a Baltimore Redbirds team that battles all the way back after an early loss in the Cal Ripken League Championship Series meets the Bethesda Big Train in Friday night’s Championship Game. So familiar, actually, that Friday night marked the third consecutive year that the two teams met in the finals.

And for the third consecutive year, despite another closely contested ballgame, the Big Train took home the trophy.

Former Poly Prep Standout Achieves Home Run Record

Few go on to the same acclaim at the college level, but one young man from Brooklyn Heights, who is about to go into his senior year at Amherst College, has broken all records in a highly competitive baseball league in the Hamptons.

2011 CPL Teams Combine to Break Single-Season Doubles Record

The 2011 Coastal Plain League season has already seen some individual records fall, and tonight, the CPL witnessed yet another – the league record for most doubles as a league in a single season.

Since 2007, the most doubles for the CPL as a whole in a season has been 1,119, but not anymore. With six days worth of games left in the 2011 regular season, the CPL has already broken that record and currently stands at 1,128 doubles.

Austin Poretz was brilliant on the mound and Jeff Kemp (Radford) drove in two runs on three hits as the Southern Maryland Nationals blanked Youse's Orioles, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in Game 1 of the 2011 Cal Ripken League Championship Series. In the nightcap, the Bethesda Big Train took advantage of late inning errors to advance past the Baltimore Redbirds, 10-4.

Oneonta eliminates Rome; faces Utica in 3 game showdow

The Oneonta Outlaws defeated the Rome Thunderbolts 5-4 last night at Damaschke Field. With the win the Outlaws now face the Utica Brewers in a best of three games series starting at 7p tonight at Donovan Field in Utica.

The Outlaws jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Singles by John Howell (Binghamton) and Chase Compton (Louisiana Lafayette) combined with a Rome error led to the first run by Howell. Compton was driven in on a single to left by Matt Chavez (University of San Francisco).

Edenton, Hyannis Jockey For Top Spot As Post-Season Play Gets Underway

The Cape Cod League’s Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Coastal Plain League’s Edenton Steamers have traded the No. 1 spot in Perfect Game’s weekly ranking of the nation’s Top 25 summer college league teams for most of the 2011 season, and both clubs are fittingly playing their best baseball of the summer as post-season play is set to get underway in most leagues.

HCBL Players of the Week 7/14-7/22

The Paniolos’ Cale Hanson (SO, Yale University) was named Hitter of the Week and the Surfers’ Robert Wineski (JR, Harvard University) was named Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 22nd.

Hanson started six games last week going 12-for-24 with five doubles, a triple, a stolen base, three runs scored and five RBIs. “I didn’t really start off too good this summer and it was good to finally have a good week and kind of get back in the swing of things. Hopefully I can carry it over to the playoffs….We’ve been playing a lot of games this summer and it’s easier when you’re playing a game every day to get your rhythm back and it feels good.”

On Wednesday Hanson went a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. “That was a good day. Those are fun.”

Wineski threw nine scoreless innings allowing four hits and one walk in two appearances—one start—last week. He went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and batters were hitting just .121 against him.





Panik Settling In Well As A Pro

Former St. John's shortstop Joe Panik is having a great start to his professional career. The Hopewell Junction native was selected by the Giants in the first round of this past June's draft. He is currently playing very well for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League

NYCBL playoff - Rome Thunderbolts (27-17) #3 at Oneonta Outlaws (29-15) #2

The NYCBL playoffs get underway with an East Division matchup between the Rome Thunderbolts (27-17) #3 at Oneonta Outlaws (29-15) #2; 7pm; Damaschke Field.

This one game playoff allows the winner to face East Division Champion Utica Brewers in a best of three series beginning Thursday night at Utica's Donovan Field.

Myrom, Wetzler earn top honors at All-Star Game.

Sean Myrom of the Knights won the Home Run Derby and Knights' pitcher Ben Wetzler was named the Top Prospect by MLB scouts at the West Coast League All-Star Game.

However, the East Division defeated the West 4-2 before an ASG-record crowd of 2,517 at Goss Stadium.

A senior-to-be at Concordia of Portland, Myrom defeated Royce Bollinger (Bend) 2-1 in the final round. Myrom blasted 13 homers overall, including seven in the opening round; Bollinger hit 10.

The West Division first round playoff matchup has the Niagara Power (24-20) #3 at Geneva Red Wings (24-20) #2; 7pm; McDonough Field.

The two teams split their season series four games a piece. Geneva was seeded number 2 with a coin flip.

Looking In On The Home Run Leaders

Below is a pretty big list of all the home run leaders in their respective leagues. As is always the case in summer league action, the numbers very greatly.

Much of this is due to the quality of the players and pitching they face. Another huge reason for the disparity is that the fields they play on vary so much. Some teams play in minor-league quality parks, while other leagues play in washed-up high school fields.

2011 CPL Rawlings Players of the Week for Week Eight

The Coastal Plain League announced Tuesday that Gastonia’s Jordan Lurie was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while the Co-Pitchers of the Week honors went to Martinsville’s Chris Smith and Columbia’s Adam Westmoreland for week eight of action (July 19-July 25).

Lurie, a junior at UNC Asheville, started all five games for the Grizzlies and finished with a .600 average. He had 12 hits, including a pair of doubles, while tallying four RBIs and a league-best nine runs scored on the week. Furthermore, Lurie racked up 14 total bases, had a slugging percentage of .700, and an on-base percentage of .680 - another league-high. He also was walked five times and was a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.

On the mound, Smith, a junior from UVa-Wise, made four appearances including one start for the Mustangs. In 7 1/3 innings of work, the 6-4, 195-pound right-hander scattered three hits while walking two and striking out nine to earn a 1-0 record with a perfect 0.00 ERA. Opposing batters also just hit .120 against him.

Meanwhile, Westmoreland, a redshirt-sophomore from South Carolina, picked up a win for the Blowfish in his start on the mound, earning a 1-0 record and perfect 0.00 ERA on the week. The 6-4, 265-pound lefty threw seven innings of five-hit baseball, walked zero and struck out eight.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both the players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 45 alums make their Major League debut thus far. Pitching Stars of the Night in the WMBL

In the Western Major Baseball League last night, Ben Dartnell (Lethbridge--Vauxhall Academy) picked up the win by throwing two shutout relief innings. Desmond Sullivan (Okotoks--Rio Grande) fanned six batters in his six innings of work. He allowed three runs and won his fifth game of the summer. Jorhn Kaluzniak (Okotoks--?) struck out two batters in his one inning pitched.  Michael Mueller (Madicine Hat--Quincy) is now 8-0 after earning the win yesterday. He allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of work.

Loggers' Tessar Throws Gem

Brando Tessar of the La Crosse Loggers threw extremely well on Monday night against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters at Witter Field. Tessar, a 6'0'' righty from Oregon, improved his record to 6-1 as he threw a four hitter in 7.0 innings of work. Tessar now sports a 2.09 earned run average in 56.0 innings pitched for La Crosse in 2011.

East Stars Down West Stars 4-2 In 2011 West Coast League All-Star Contest

A crowd of 2,517 turned out at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon Tuesday night, as the East Division All-Stars defeated the West Division All-Stars 4-2. Cowlitz Black Bears' outfielder Spencer O'Neil (Oregon) was voted the games MVP by the 24 major league scouts in attendance. O'Neil had three hits, including a double and a home run. Corvallis Knights' southpaw Ben Wetzler (Oregon State) was honored as the Top Prospect in the game by the scouts. The pre-game Home Run Derby featured dozens of mammoth blasts and was won by Corvallis Knights' first baseman Sean Myrom (Concordia/OR).

Offensive Stars of the Night in the Coastal Plain League

In the Coastal Plain League last night, Danny Gesick (Fayetteville--Shawnee State) went 1 for 2, with a homer and 2 runs batted in. Shane Brown (Florence--UNC Charlotte) went a combined 4 for 8 in the Red Wolves double header sweep. He scored 3 runs, hit 1 double and stole 3 bases for the Wolves. Tony Micklon (Florence--Presbyterian) went 3 for 4, with a home run and 3 runs batted in. Chris Williams (Florence--Oral Roberts) went 1 for 3, with 2 rbi's and a home run.

Two Pitchers Worth Watching For

Joey Novak is a Junior right-handed pitcher from the Duluth Huskies by way of Harvard. He is 6-0/190 pounds and he hails from Lakeville, MN. He is having a very exceptional summer season, and he positioning himself to become one of Harvard's top pitchers in 2012.

In the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League last night, Jim Brenneman (Hamilton--Campbell) went 3 for 4, with a triple and homer. He also drove in 4 on the night. Jensen Painter (Southern Ohio--Ohio) went 2 for 3, with a double and he hit his 6th home run of the summer. He also drove in 3 on the night. Brian Robinson (Grand Lake--Grand Valley State) wetn 3 for 4, with a double and run scored yesterday.

Regina Red Sox chasing history again

For the second consecutive season, the Regina Red Sox have a very good chance of making history.

A 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon over the Melville Millionaires at Currie Field improved the Red Sox' record to 29-10, which is good for the first overall spot in the Western Major Baseball League. The win total from this season matches the one the team had in 2010 when the team finished with a 29-13 mark.

Utica clinches East; Webster clinches West

The Utica Brewers concluded their regular season Sunday clinching the East Division with a 10-5 win over Oneonta. In the West, Webster clinched their division Saturday with a 5-0 win over Niagara.

Pitching Stars of the Night in the Coastal Plain League

As the summer season in the CPL is winding down, there is no letdown of quality pitching performances. Dom Macaluso (Fayetteville--St. Peters) picked up the win in a rain-shortened game. He threw five shutout innings, allowed just three hits and he fanned three batters. Brennan Dorsett (Florence--Charleston Southern) threw six shutout innings for the win. He allowed five hits and fanned six on the night.

Starting Pitchers Named For Tuesday Night's All-Star Game In Corvallis

UC Riverside southpaw Dylan Stuart gets the starting nod for the West Division All-Star Team in Tuesday's West Coast League All-Star Game in Corvallis, Oregon. The Corvallis Knights pitcher has a 2-1 mark with a 1.31 ERA in 6 starts. Adrian Sampson of the Bellingham Bells will start for the East Division All-Star Team. Sampson, a right-hander from Bellevue College, has the league's lowest ERA at 0.84, with a 4-2 record over 7 starts, and has allowed only 27 hits in 53-1/3 innings pitched. He was drafted in the 15th round by the Florida Marlins in the recent MLB Draft.

Pitching Stars of the Night in the Prospect League

There were several quality pitching performances in the Prospect League last night. Ryan Billo (Dubois County--Evansville) allowed just one run in his seven innings of work. He also fanned five batters. Nathan Dorris (Richmond--SIU) pitched six shutout innings last night. He also fanned three on the night.

Mazzoni, MoonDogs a perfect match

His coach at Fresno Pacific sent out an email to see if anyone was interested, hoping to find a spot for his junior right-hander. The Mankato MoonDogs answered.

With a full slate of action in the Northwoods League last night, I've got a large list of players that had productive games. Garrett Nash (Wis Rapids--Oregon State) wetn 2 for 5, with a home run and two stolen bases. Cullen Mahoney (Thunder Bay--S. Mountain College) went 1 for 5, with a home run. Casey Selsor (T.B--UTSA) went 2 for 4, with a home run and rbi. Ino Patron (T.B--LBSU) went 1 for 4, with a home run and rbi.

Pitching Stars Of The Night in the Cal Ripken League

In the Cal Ripken League last night, Chris Bloch (Alexandria--Transylvania) turned in one of the best outings in the league yesterday. He didn't allow a run on just two hits in his seven innings of work. He also fanned three batters while picking up the win for the Aces. Austin Urban (Youse's--DMACC) earned his second win of the game yesterday. He allowed one run, gave up three hits and pitched five solid innings. He also fanned three batters yesterday.

SwampDogs Cody Davis Signs with Washington Nationals

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs announced that Cody Davis has signed a professional contract to play with the Washington Nationals.

Davis was the only player selected to the 2011 CPL All-Star Game as both a position player and a pitcher. At the plate, he hit .280 with nine doubles, one homerun, and 23 RBI’s this season, while stealing eight bases in 13 attempts. He committed just two errors for a .964 fielding percentage as the SwampDogs primary centerfielder.

New Single Season Attendance Record Set By Bend Elks

The Bend Elks have surpassed the club's 2010 record setting attendance. After 23 dates the Elks have drawn 41,593 fans, eclipsing the all-time West Coast League mark of 37,963. The Elks have four regular season home dates remaining

Black Pitching Well For The Aviators

Texas State and current Westhampton Aviator, Taylor Black is putting together a fine season in the ACBL. Taylor is a red-shirt freshman from Allen, TX. He is currently 4-2, and is sporting a very nice 1.70 era in 42.1 innings of work. He has given up just 27 hits and he's fanned 40 batters this season. Earlier this month, he was also named to the ACBL All-Star Game.

The Riverhead Tomcats produced 24 hits as they swept an Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader from the Sag Harbor Whalers, 6-5 and 11-8, on Thursday.

The following four players all were the stars of the night in the West Coast League last night. Mike Bush (Cowlitz--Lews and Clark State) went 1 for 4, with a home run and 3 rbi's. Claude Johnson (Kitsap--Arkansas State) went a perfect 4 for 4, with a double. Brock Gates (Wenatchee--Pacific Lutheran) went 1 for 4, with a home run. Ryan Barnes (Wentachee--Oregon State) went 3 for 3, with a run scored.

Pitching Stars of the Night in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League

In the GLSCL last night, Adam Clark (Lima--EIU) pitched the final three innings to earn his fourth save of the summer. Austin Dunfee (Southern Ohio--Shawnee State) allowed just one hit in his four innings of work. Cody Gibson (Southern Ohio--Morehead State) fanned one batter in his inning of work to earn his 2nd save of the summer.

Pitching Stars of the NYCBL

In the New York Collegiate League last night, Billy Everding (Syracuse Salt Cats--Polk State) pitched a 9-inning complete game. He allowed two run, 6 hits and struck out 4 in the win. Nate Harris (Syracse JR Chiefs--?) picked up a no-decision last night. He allowed 2 earned runs, gave up 3 hits and pitched 8.2 innings. He also fanned 4 in the game.

Offensive Stars of the Night in the Flor

Just two completed games on the schedule in the FCSL yesterday. Kevin Clements (Winter Haven--Trinity) went 2 for 4, with a double and run scored. The FCSL All-Star is now hitting .343 this summer. Kevin Lindheim (DeLand--Stetson) went 2 for 2, with a home run and walk on the night.

Serritella Pounds Three Homers Last Night

All Chris Serritella (SIU) did last night was go 4 for 4 with 3 home runs for the Quincy Gems yesterday. The 3 home runs now run league-leading total to 10 on the season. He also hit 1 double and knocked in 5 yesterday. Chris is now hitting .369 this season.

Mathews Breaks Tobs Single-Season Home Run Record

Tobs center fielder Ryan Mathews (N.C. State, photo courtesy of Pat Grecinger) broke the team’s single-season home run record when he belted his 13th long ball out of the park at Fleming Stadium Wednesday night in Wilson.

Mathews had tied the Tobs record of 12 homers in a season the night before in Edenton, when he hit a three-run shot in the top of the fourth off of the Steamers’ Eddie Perkins. Mathews’ record-breaking home run last night was also of the three-run variety, and came against Peninsula starter Ethan Carter in the bottom of the first.

South tops North in CRCBL All-Star Game

On Tuesday night, the South All-Stars of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League defeated the North All-Stars, 5-3, in front of a crowd of 350 at Shirley Povich Field.

Alex Hudak (Big Train/Florida Atlantic) was named the game’s MVP, going 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate, and getting a crucial outfield assist in the third inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jacob Morley (River Dogs/VMI) singled to left. Hudak came up firing and nailed the runner at home by at least five steps, ending the inning. He also made an impressive diving catch on a hooking line drive in the sixth.

Olinger 'Stars' in NWL All-Star Game

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – On a lazy, mid-July day in central Wisconsin, the second largest crowd in the 83-year history of Witter Field (2,408 fans) braved the heat and humidity to be a part of the Northwoods League All-Star Game.

Keep in mind, the 2,408 people that came through the turnstiles represents 13-percent of the city of Wisconsin Rapids' population (18,435).

Lieser Throws Complete Game

Browerville, Minn., native Scott Lieser threw a complete game Wednesday night for the Willmar Stingers in game one of their double header. The 6'3'' right-handed pitcher threw all 7.0 innings and allowed nine hits and zero runs while striking out four Duluth Huskies. The St. Cloud State product is now 2-4 with a 4.53 earned run average.

Day at the Bases - Beavers Move Closer to Playoffs

The Weyburn Beavers aided their playoff chances with a win at home against Moose Jaw on Wednesday.

Weyburn Beavers 6 (14-19) – Moose Jaw Miller Express 4 (15-22)

Weyburn wasted no time, posting 3 runs in the first inning to take control early against Moose Jaw starter Dustin Caplette (Williston St.) All three runs would score on a Derek Wallace (Miss. Valley St.) homerun, scoring Johnathan Rodriguez (Eastern AZ) and Chad Livingston (SE Louisiana).

Toppmeyer: Gems' lack of profitable seasons is hard to explain

If Hubert Staff is to believed, the future of the Quincy Gems is uncertain if the Gems can't turn a profit this season.

Staff should know. He's the chairman of the Quincy Civic Center Authority, which serves as the board for the Oakley-Lindsay Center -- the owner and operator of the Gems.

Then again, if David Chase is to be believed, "virtually all the teams (in the Prospect League) have been profitable."
