Big Train jumps 11 spots in Top 25

After debuting in the first Perfect Game Collegiate Summer Top 25 at number 21 in the country, the Bethesda Big Train has jumped to number 10 in just one week. The Big Train (17-4) have won eight of their last nine games and have moved into first place in the Cal Ripken League standings, passing the Southern Maryland Nationals (14-4), who won their first eleven games of the season.

Nightly Awards From the Northwoods League--June 29th

In the Northwoods League last night, the 8th ranked Mankato Moondogs defeated Thunder Bay 6-2. The 14th ranked Madison Mallards were soundly defeated by the Green Bay Bullfrogs. This was the Bullfrogs 5th win in a row. The 18th ranked Eau Claire Express fell in the 11th inning to the Battle Creek Bombers. The other winners include the Wisconsin Woodchucks over Waterloo, the Alexandria Beetles over the Duluth Huskies in 15 innings, Brainerd over Rochester, La Crosse over Wisconsin Rapids, and the Willmar Stingers over St. Cloud.

Nightly Awards From the Cape Cod League--June 28th

In the Cape Cod League yesterday, the #1 ranked Harwich Mariners were defeated by the 25th ranked Bourne Braves. The 5th ranked Hyannis Harbor Hawks beat the Cotuit Kettleers. The eleventh ranked Orleans Firebirds were downed by the YD Red Sox and the Wareham Gatemen beat the Falmouth Commodores.

Eagle Ballplayers Heat Up In Summer League Competition

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- With summer league baseball now in full swing, a number of Morehead State baseball players have stood out at the plate and on the mound for their respective clubs.

Catcher Taylor Davis leads the Cape Cod league in RBI (11) and batting average (.385) for the Brewster Whitecaps. He has compiled 15 hits, three doubles and one home run this season.

Nightly Awards From the Northwoods League--June 28th

Yesterday was a tough day for the ranked teams in the Northwoods League. The Eighth ranked Mankato Moondogs fell to the Thunder Bay Border Cats. The 18th ranked Eau Claire Express were knocked off by the La Crosse Loggers, and the 14th ranked Madison Mallards split a double header with the Wisconsin Woodchucks. The other winning teams from last night were the Alexandria Beetles in 10 innings, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, the Green Bay Bullfrogs in 12 innings, and the Duluth Huskies.

Nightly Awards From the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League--June 28th

In the PGCBL last night, the lone ranked team (#12 Glens Falls) squeaked by he Elmira Pioneers 5-4. The other winners, both in blowouts were the Amsterdam Mohawks and the Watertown Wizards. After last nights games, the Glens Falls Eagles are still the best team in the league with a 11-3 record.

Nightly Awards From the Valley Baseball League--June 28th

The Valley League has one team ranked in the Perfect Game rankings this week. The 7th ranked Harrisonburg Turks shut out the Luray Wranglers 7-0. Other winners included: Front Royal, New Market, Waynesboro, and Haymarket.

Nationals start fast in second season

A quarter of the way through the Cal Ripken League season, players and coaches alike can agree that this year has been just as special as any of the previous six. One team, however, has quickly and impressively risen above the mark they set in their 2010 inaugural season: three weeks into June, the Southern Maryland Nationals had compiled a 11-0 record, three wins shy of their 2010 total.

Statistical Quick Hit From June 28th

As most of you know, I love stats. It doesn't matter if they are offensive or pitching stats, but I enjoy digging into the statistical side of baseball. One of my favorite stat is the simple hit. It's not fancy, not a favorite of the SABR folks, but it is the most basic stat that lets us know how a player is playing. Below are the hits leaders in three summer leagues.

In the Northwoods League last night, Brainerd and Mankato picked up big wins thanks to outstanding pitching performances. The Wisconsin Woodchucks scored nine runs in their win over the Madison Mallards. The Wisconsin Rapids scored a run in the bottom of the 10th to beat the Waterloo Bucks. Lastly, Willmar, Green Bay and Duluth all won in one-run games.

Twenty-Two CPL Alums on Florida and South Carolina Rosters for College World Series Finals

With the start of the College World Series championship series between Florida and defending champion South Carolina (logos courtesy of Florida and South Carolina Sports Information offices, and the NCAA) set to begin tonight, the Coastal Plain League is proud to announce it has 22 alums from both teams combined.

Nightly Awards From the WMBL--June 27th

In the Western Major Baseball League yesterday, the Swift Current Indians, Melville Millionaires, and the Okotoks Dawgs all picked up wins. Despite the loss, the Medicine Hat Mavericks are still the best team in the league and are sporting an 18-4 record.

Nightly Awards From the Prospect League--June 27th

In the Prospect League last night, the Danville Dans and the Springfield  Sliders put on an offensive show as both teams combined for 27 runs and 30 hits in the Dans win. The Terre Haute Rex now have won three games in a row with their win yesterday. The Slippery Rock Sliders defeated the Chillicothe Paints 5-2 and the Dekalb County Liners needed 10 innings to beat the Dubois County Bombers.

Dillon Lands TCL Honor for Second Straight Week

One week after Jaden Dillon fired a one-run complete game against the Acadiana Cane Cutters, he set the bar for the rest of the Texas Collegiate League even higher.

Dillon took the mound for his fourth start in front of a Fireworks Friday crowd at historic Driller Park and delivered a show of his own, shutting down the Victoria Generals in a complete game shutout.

Nightly Awards From the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League--June 26th

In the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League yesterday, the Grand Lake Mariners defeated the Licking County Settlers 4-2 in a seven-inning game. The Stark County Terriers won their third game of the season yesterday by pounding the Lake Erie Monarchs. Lastly, the Xenia Scouts beat the Hamilton Joes 8-5.

Steamers Clinch First Half Northern Division Title with Win over Tobs

Brooks Fiala pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings for the Steamers and with the 13-1 win at Hicks Field over the Wilson Tobs, Edenton clinched the first half Northern Division Title and will play for the Petitt Cup Championship in August.

A scoreless game was broken up between Edenton and Wilson in the bottom of the fourth after Zach Stewart reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second base. Tim Saunders hit a two-out RBI single to score Stewart and give the Steamers a 1-0 lead over the Tobs.

There were three games in the West Coast League last night. The Kitsap Blue Jackets beat the Bend Elks 3-1. the Bellingham Bells crushed the Klamath Gems 11-0, and the Kelowna Falcons beat the Walla Walla Sweets 1-0.

Nightly Awards From the NECBL--June 26th

In the NECBL last night, the #8 ranked Holyoke Blue Sox used superb pitching to shutout the Danbury Westerners. The Newport Gulls are  now in first place with their 1-0 win over the SteepleCats. As has been the case 10 times this season, the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide lost again. The Bay Sox moved over the .500 mark with their extra-inning over Vermont. Lastly, the Laconia Muskrats won a slugest 13-9 over the Sanford Mainers.

Nightly Awards From the Cape Cod League--June 26th

In the Cape Cod League last night, the #1 ranked Hyannis Harbor Hawks were shut out by the Bourne Braves. The Falmouth Commodores used great pitching to upset the #7 ranked Orleans Firebirds. Former Kelowna Falcons Star To Play In Futures Game June 10 In Phoenix

Seattle Mariners farmhand James Paxton has been selected to participate in the 13th annual XM All-Star Futures Game June 10 in Phoenix. Paxton, a Richmond, British Columbia product, will represent the World Team. The left-hander pitched for the Kelowna Falcons in 2007, leading the West Coast League in starts, innings pitched and strikeouts. Pitching at Kentucky, Paxton was selected in the 1st round of the 2009 MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He didn't sign and was chosen by the Mariners in the 4th round of the 2010 draft. This season Paxton has 9 starts and is 3-3 with a 2.70 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 50 innings pitching with Clinton in the Class A Midwest League.

BUCKS SET DATE FOR 3RD ANNUAL "HIT FOR THE CYCLE" BIKE RIDE

Sunday, July 10 will be the date of the event, which is sponsored by Scheels, Toads Bar & Grill, Pepper's Grill &Sports Pub, Smitty's Bar, Catherine Doyle's Pub, and BJ's Bar & Grill.

The rain let up yesterday as fourteen teams were able to play yesterday. The best game(s) were in Alexandria as the Beetles swept the doubleheader from the #4 ranked Mankato Moondogs. The Eau Claire Express won their sixth in a row last night, and the Rapids Rafters also won a game last night. The #13 ranked Madison Mallards squeaked by the La Crosse Loggers, and with their win last night, the Willmar Stingers moved above the .500 mark. The St. Cloud River Bats won their sixth in a row last night, while the Woodchucks of Wisconsin won their second in a row.

Marlins Sign Garrett Wittels

The Morehead City Marlins have announced that Garrett Wittels will join the team for the remainder of its campaign for the Coastal Plain League’s Petitt Cup. Wittels, an infielder at Florida International University, hit .345 with 40 runs batted in for the Panthers in the spring. Prior to the 2011 season, Wittels was named to the National College Baseball Writers of America and Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America teams.

Nightly Awards From the Cal Ripken League--June 23rd

In Cal Ripken League action last night, the #11 ranked Southern Maryland Nationals were defeated in a pitchers duel by the Rockville Express. The Bethesda Big Train needed 10 innings to beat the Baltimore Redbirds. This is the Big Train's fifth win in a row. Lastly, despite a late comeback, the Alexandria Aces held on to beat the Herndon Braves. Unfortunately for Herndon, this was their sixth loss in a row.

Nightly Awards From the NWL--June 22nd

There were supposed to be 11 games played in the Northwoods League last night. Unfortunately, it seems like the rain was the real winner as 10 of the 11 games were cancelled. In the lone game played the Waterloo Bucks defeated the #13 ranked Madison Mallards in a six-inning game.

Below are the top five hitters (in terms of AVG) in the Texas Collegiate League. Overall, there are some great numbers on the list, but it seems that the TCL is a pitchers league right now.

In California Collegiate League action from June 22nd, the number 2 team in the country, the Santa Barbara Foresters fell in defeat to the Orange City Pioneers. The Conejo Oaks nearly had a no-hitter as they defeated Team Las Vegas. The 11-4 SLO Blues upended the struggling MLB Academy Barons, and the Angelenos of Glendale pounded the San Fransisco Seals.

Day at the Bases - Mavs Show No Signs of Slowing Down

Action in the WMBL on Tuesday night finished up very quickly, with a pair of games being played in 2-hours or less.

In Medicine Hat, the Mavericks continued their dream start to the season, in front of a season high crowd of over 1300 fans at Athletic Park.
