AppleSox Add Four from UCLA
Posted by Andrew on 10:16 AM
From the Wenatchee AppleSox
(Wenatchee, WA)- UCLA will once again be one of the AppleSox top suppliers of young talent by sending four players to join the team in 2011. Freshman infielder Pat Valaika, along with three high school recruits – right-handed pitcher Joe Ross, infielder Tyler Goeddel, and outfielder Eric Snyder – are set to spend their summer in Wenatchee.
“The relationship with UCLA head coach John Savage goes back to when he was an assistant at USC,” said Knaggs. “He does us a favor each season with the type of players he sends us.”
The Bruins are looking for a return trip to Omaha after losing to South Carolina in the College World Series finals last season. They were ranked as high as the No. 1 in preseason rankings and are currently ranked No. 24.
Valaika has seen action right away for the Bruins. On opening day he was the only freshman in the starting lineup for UCLA and is hitting .190 with 8 RBIs. He comes from a baseball family. Older brother Chris made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010 and another brother Matt plays in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization. He is a product of Hart High School in Valencia, CA, which is also the alma mater of AppleSox head coach Ed Knaggs and UCLA teammate and former AppleSox player Trevor Brown.
“He has been their guy at shortstop most of the season and that’s the position he will play with us this summer,” said Knaggs.
It will be the third summer in a row that the Bruins have sent high school recruits to play for the AppleSox. Cody Keefer (2009) and Zack Weiss (2010) both saw playing time immediately for the Bruins after gaining experience with the AppleSox out of high school.
"Coach Savage likes his incoming freshman to play in our league to get some college level experience before they step on campus," said Knaggs. “With how talented the high school players are there is always a chance that we might not see them here. All three of these guys will be tempted by the MLB draft in June, but it’s a risk we are willing to take.”
Ross, from Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA, was rated No. 21 overall in Baseball America's list of the top 100 high school signees during the early signing period in the fall, checking in among the top 10 pitchers on that list. His older brother, Tyson, was a second round pick in the 2008 draft and made his MLB debut with the Oakland A's in 2010.
“Joe is the best right-handed pitching prospect in California. He has a very athletic delivery and a fastball that explodes at the plate. We look forward to watching Joe compete for a weekend job right away at UCLA. His potential as a pitcher is unlimited," said UCLA head coach John Savage on signing day.
Goeddel is one of the star players for St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA, the No. 1 ranked high school team in the country according to the latest Baseball America poll. He was rated No. 27 overall in Baseball America's list of the top 100 high school signees during the early signing period. As a junior he hit .488 with one home run, two triples, 17 RBI, 13 runs and 10 stolen bases. His older brother Erik pitched for UCLA in 2009 and 2010.
Snyder was also ranked in Baseball America's list of the top 100 high school signees, checking in at No. 74 overall. He attends Edison High School in Huntington Beach, CA, where he earned Sunset League MVP honors and first-team All-CalHiSports All-State underclassman acclaim last season. He hit .500 as a high school freshman, tying a school record held by Jeff Kent for best single-season batting average.
The AppleSox open the 2011 season June 3rd with a three-game home series against the Kitsap BlueJackets. Tickets are available now at www.applesox.com or by calling (509) 665-6900.

Molitor to Headline 2011 NWL All-Star Game
Posted by Andrew on 9:56 AM
From the Northwoods League
The 2011 Marshfield Clinic Northwoods League All-Star Game will feature former Milwaukee Brewers great and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Paul Molitor at Historic Witter Field on Monday, July 18th in Wisconsin Rapids.
This will be a return trip to Historic Witter Field for Molitor, who played in two series against the Midwest League’s Wisconsin Rapids Twins in 1977, while a member of the Burlington Bees in his only season in the minor leagues.
Molitor will be available for autographs for a limited time when the gates open at 5:30 p.m. for the July 18th Marshfield Clinic Northwoods League All-Star Game this summer. All fans that have purchased season tickets or 9 Game Packs* to the game will be ensured first priority for autographs from Molitor. Already have a 9 Game Package B? This is okay! For a limited time you can purchase the All-You-Can-Eat-and-Drink ticket option for the All-Star game for just $9.89.
Molitor, who was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004, played for the Brewers for 15 seasons (1978 to 1992) and was a 5-time All-Star selection during that span. Although the Brewers magical 1982 run at a franchise-first World Series title came a few outs short in a runner-up finish to the St. Louis Cardinals, Molitor did his part by batting .355 (11-for-31), including a five-hit performance in game one of the best-of-seven series.
Molitor also attracted national media attention during his 39-game hitting streak in 1987, which ended with him standing in the on-deck circle during a game-ending hit by teammate Rick Manning. The streak continues to stand as the fifth-longest in modern-day baseball history, and remains the longest since Pete Rose’s 44-game hit streak in 1978. The Brewers retired Molitor’s uniform number 4 on June 11, 1999.
Molitor signed with the Toronto Blue Jays as a free agent in 1992 and helped lead the team to a World Series title the following year. After that final six-game series, he was named MVP for batting .500 (12-for-24) and became the first player in World Series history to have at least two home runs, two doubles, and two triples in one series.
Molitor concluded his career by playing for the Minnesota Twins for three seasons (1996-1998), where he acquired his 3,000th hit on September 6, 1996. He remains the only player in Major League history to reach that milestone with a triple.
His lifetime statistics include 2,683 games played, 1,782 runs scored, 3,319 hits, 234 home runs, 1,307 RBI, a .306 batting average, and 504 stolen bases. His 3,319 hits rank him ninth all-time. In addition, he batted .368 in 5 postseason series, and was a seven-time All-Star. Molitor recorded these statistics while missing nearly 500 games due to various injuries throughout his career.
Molitor is one of four players in major league history with at least 3,000 hits, a .300 lifetime batting average, and 500 stolen bases. The other three are Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Eddie Collins, none of whom played the game beyond 1930. He is the only player ever to accomplish those feats and hit at least 200 home runs.

Marlins Sign Two Pirates
Posted by Andrew on 9:36 AM
From the CPL
The Morehead City Marlins announced today the signing of two players from East Carolina University. Freshmen Chase McDonald and Dario Santangelo (pictured L-R, courtesy of ECU Sports Information) will don the Marlins uniform this summer.
McDonald, a heavy-hitting first baseman from Greenville, has started 15-of-17 games for the Pirates so far this season. As a designated hitter, he has a .273 batting average, one home run, and nine RBIs in 55 at-bats. McDonald was highly-touted coming out of high school. The former Under Armour Preseason All-American earned his team’s MVP award and All-State honors as a senior.
“McDonald is a strong hitter with a tremendous future in college baseball,” said Marlins Manager Jay Bergman. “He will be essential to our lineup this summer.”
Santangelo, an Edison, N.J., native, is redshirting for the Pirates this season, due to the tremendous depth of the East Carolina staff, which leads all of NCAA Division I with a 1.67 team ERA. The right-hander garnered numerous honors in high school; including an all-conference nod his senior year and an honorable mention selection to the Perfect Game All-American team following his junior season.
“Dario will throw a lot of innings for the Marlins,” said Bergman. “He’s got great stuff, and a good, hard slider. We will probably use him a lot like we did Shawn Armstrong last summer.”
The Morehead City Marlins are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. From the NWL
The Bombers have re-signed Dan Dispensa of Western Illinois University for the 2011 season. Dispensa is the third returning player on the roster; University of Michigan’s Chad Jasman and Taylor University’s Ryne Otis are the other announced Bombers returning to Battle Creek.
“Dan was a great clubhouse guy last year and one of our best workers. He can hit, steal bases, and play anywhere in the outfield. He gives our coaching staff the ability to play different guys in different positions depending on what type of pitcher we might face that night,” said Bombers General Manager Brian Colopy.
Dispensa played in 62 of 70 games for the Bombers in 2010, hit .232 and drove in 11 runs. This season for Western Illinois, he has improved, hitting .322 (second highest on team) with seven RBIs and an on-base percentage of .459. He has started all 16 games he’s played in for the 3-15 Leathernecks. A natural athlete, Dispensa played football for WIU his freshman season.

“Baseball is king in Cold Spring. It’s all over the place. I’ve played with the Springers the past three years and it’s been a lot of fun,” Hansen said. “Having my family around to watch me play has been great.”

From the Newport Gulls
Newport RI – The Newport Gulls added NECBL veteran Al Leyva to the 2011 coaching staff as Hitting Coach and Third Base coach. Leyva has previously coached in the NECBL over five seasons as manager and assistant coach on three different clubs.
After successful coaching stints at both the high school and college levels, Al started his NECBL coaching career as the manager of the Middletown Giants in 2003, taking them into the playoffs in his first year. In 2004 and 2005, he served as an assistant coach with the Manchester Silkworms making a playoff appearance in both years.
In 2006 Coach Leyva took the summer off from the NECBL and made his professional coaching debut with the Chicago White Sox rookie ball team in Bristol, Tennessee. There he served as an assistant coach to his brother Nick Leyva. His brother Nick has been coaching professionally since 1978 and served as Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1989 – 1991 and is currently a third base coach with the Pittsburg Pirates.
In 2007, Leyva returned to the NECBL as Manager of the North Adams Steeple Cats taking them into the first round of the playoffs against the Newport Gulls, losing the series two games to none. In 2008, Al returned as Manager of the Manchester Silkworms taking them into the first round of the playoffs against the Newport Gulls, also losing in two games. The Gulls were the eventual division champions in both years.
“We have always admired the coaching talents of Coach Leyva, he has always managed to keep his teams competitive and focused right to the end which is difficult to do in summer college baseball”, says Chuck Paiva, Newport Gulls General Manager.
Chris Patsos, VP of Baseball Operations believes that Al brings a wealth of knowledge to the Newport Gulls, “Al brings a ton of experience to our staff and will be a great addition for Coach Coombs. Coach Coombs is excited to have Al join his staff and so am I”.
Coach Leyva resides in Chino, California with his wife Connie and twin daughters, Allie and Jessie.

Pair of Hurlers Join 2011 Rafters Staff
Posted by Andrew on 2:50 PM
From the NWL
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters added a pair of right handed pitchers to their staff today by announcing the additions of Kevin Wild (Valparaiso) and Joey Wagman (Cal Poly).
Kevin Wild, a Brown Deer, Wisconsin, native joined Valparaiso for his junior season after spending his freshman and sophomore campaigns at Madison Junior College. The right hander has appeared in 8 games for the Crusaders this spring, posting a sparkling 3.00 ERA. In 12.0 innings pitched in relief, he has struck out 14 batters while limiting opponents to a .205 batting average. He will join Valparaiso teammate, shortstop Bobby Martin, on the Rafters this summer.
Last year for Madison, Wild appeared in 15 games on the mound while starting four. He tossed 32.1 innings while registering a 4-2 record and helped lead his team to the NJCAA Division 2 World Series. In 2009, as a freshman, Wild posted a 4.50 ERA. He earned Academic All-North Central Community College Conference honors in both of his seasons in Madison.
Wild was a four-year letter winner for the Brown Deer Falcons, three-time All-Woodland Conference honoree, and was named All-Suburban in 2007 and 2008 and All-District in 2008. He is majoring in Business at Valparaiso.
Joey Wagman is amidst his sophomore season for Cal Poly in 2011. Through 4 appearances, 2 starts, he carries a 2-1 record with a 7.11 ERA. In 12.2 innings pitched, he has allowed 15 hits, while striking out 8. His ERA is deceiving, as it is for most hurlers during the spring when facing aluminum bats, which are sometimes unforgiving.
Last spring, Wagman appeared in 12 games, including five starts, as a true freshman for the Mustangs. He compiled a 1-2 record and struck out 25 batters in 33 innings during the season. He earned a win in first-ever college start, pitching six innings against Pepperdine and allowing one run and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Following his 2010 spring season, Wagman played summer ball for the Walla Walla Sweets of the summer collegiate West Coast League. He posted a 2-2 record and 2.65 ERA in 6 games, 4 starts for Wall Walla, while also recording 21 strikeouts in 34 innings. His performance in the West Coast League is very indicative of numbers he projects when facing wood bats again in the Northwoods League this summer.
A 2009 graduate of Monte Vista High School in Danville, California, Wagman compiled a 2.03 ERA on the mound helped Mustangs to 17-8 record his senior year. He is majoring in Business Administration at Cal Poly.

Woodchucks Sign Merrill’s Grunenwald
Posted by Andrew on 4:52 PM
From the Wisconsin Woodchucks
Alex Grunenwald, a sophomore infielder at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, has signed with the Wisconsin Woodchucks for the 2011 season.
A native of Merrill, Wisconsin, the 6-foot-3-inch 225 pound first-baseman will return to central Wisconsin this summer, after signing a letter of intent to play at Division I Illinois-Chicago (UIC) next fall. Grunenwald is the second Wisconsin Valley Conference alumni to sign with the ‘Chucks this season, joining former D.C. Everest Evergreen Cameron Amsrud.
Grunenwald is currently in his second season with the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes, after spending a redshirt season at Louisiana Tech in 2009.
“This fall they [UIC] came down, offered me, got me up there for a visit,” said Grunenwald. “I really liked it and I decided to take it- it’s going to be real nice to be closer to home.”
Currently, Grunenwald is hitting .256 with 6 RBI and a .377 on-base percentage on the spring at Chandler-Gilbert, while the team holds a 9-12 record. Grunenwald hit .326 with a team high 32 RBI in 2010.
“We’ve struggled early on this year as a team, but we’ve really started to pick it up recently here in conference play. Personally- this season is going okay, it also started off a little slow, but I’m starting to pick things up now.”
A multi-sport star in high school, Grunenwald chose Louisiana Tech over interest from dozens of Division I schools to play football.
“I definitely have watched them ever since I was a kid,” said Grunenwald of the Woodchucks. ” My family actually hosted Woodchucks players in the past when I was a little kid, so I’ve always looked up to them- and I still stay in touch with a few of them.
“When I was about seven or eight, I was actually a batboy for the Woodchucks, so it’s kind of funny now where I’ll be actually playing for them. I’m really just looking forward to the season and playing at home, it’s gonna be pretty exciting to actually play [for the Woodchucks].”

Marlins Sign Division II All-American

From the CPL
The Morehead City Marlins have announced the signing of one of Division II’s most powerful hitters. The Marlins welcome Mount Olive College first baseman Michael Knox, Jr. (Picture courtesy Mount Olive Sports Information) to the 2011 team.
Knox, standing 6-foot-4 at 230 pounds, is no stranger to North Carolina as he hails from Cary. For his sophomore season, Knox transferred to Mount Olive following one year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has been a mainstay in the middle of the Trojans lineup ever since.
Knox has been instrumental in the success of the Trojans, who are currently ranked first in the nation by College Baseball Lineup Division II Top 30 Poll. This spring season, Knox leads all of D-II in home runs (13), slugging percentage (1.035), walks (38), and on-base percentage (.605). Earlier in the year, the junior became the first Trojan to ever smash four round-trippers in a single game, as well as the first Mount Olive player to hit for the cycle in a game. Prior to opening of the 2011 spring season and after his dominant 2010 season, Knox was named a Division II Preseason All-American by Baseball America. In 2010, Knox also led his team in home runs (24) and RBI (93).
“Michael [Knox] is putting up incredible numbers for Mount Olive right now,” said Marlins Manager Jay Bergman. “He is an RBI machine, and he’s one of those guys you can’t leave out of a lineup.”

The Morehead City Marlins are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Pump Jacks Add Dynamic Duo from Big 12
Posted by Andrew on 2:17 PM
From the East Texas Pump Jacks
Kash and Z. They almost sound like a superhero duo.
The East Texas Pump Jacks certainly hope so, as the team announced today the signing of Kash Kalkowski from the University of Nebraska and the University of Missouri's Rob Zastryzny. Kalkowski, a redshirt sophomore outfielder, will be expected to provide some punch in the heart of the order, while Zastryzny, a true freshman, will help anchor the rotation.
Kalkowski’s season started with a bang and has only gotten better since. In his first start of the spring, on February 19 against Washington, Kalkowski connected for a grand slam, propelling the Cornhuskers to a 10-1 victory. The slam was his first collegiate hit in just his fifth at-bat since coming to Lincoln.
The former Tampa Bay Rays draft choice has continued to hit ever since. He has had a hit in 15 of 18 starts and authored a 12-game hitting streak during the first month of the season. His .348 average tops the Huskers and ranks just outside the top 15 in the Big 12, while his four home runs are tied for second in the conference. Kalkowski’s .621 slugging percentage, also a team best, places him fourth in the Big 12. He is second on Nebraska with 21 RBI, one behind the team leader, who has 30 more at-bats than Kalkowski.
Despite opening the season as a platoon player, Kalkowski is now entrenched as the Cornhuskers cleanup hitter. He moved into the cleanup spot a week ago, after which he has batted .318 with two triples and two home runs. He’s also driven in nine runs and scored six more in the last six games.
Kalkowski’s performance is all the more impressive considering he lost his entire 2010 season to shoulder surgery, and he had only three hitless at-bats in his freshman campaign. Used primarily on the mound in 2009, Kalkowski appeared in 19 games and started twice, posting a 1-2 record while striking out 32 in 34.1 innings. He went on to play for the La Crosse Loggers in the Northwoods League that summer and showed promise, going 1-1 with a 0.79 ERA in four outings before going down with a torn labrum.
The Nebraska native became one of the state’s most heralded prospects as a two-way threat for Grand Island High School. He was named the Nebraska Player of the Year by both Gatorade and Louisville Slugger as a senior, when he was also tabbed a Louisville Slugger pre- and post-season All-American. He went 6-1 with three saves and a 1.51 ERA on the mound, striking out 65 in 55.2 innings pitched. At shortstop, he batted .460 with 32 RBI, 34 runs, and 27 steals to solidify his place on multiple all-state teams. Despite his commitment to the University of Nebraska, Tampa Bay took a flyer and selected Kalkowski in the 49th round of the 2008 draft.
Interestingly, as impressive as numbers were during his senior year, they were hardly Kalkowski’s most dominant showing. As a junior, he went 6-2 with a sparkling 0.81 ERA, and he led the state with a .506 batting average while driving in 34 runs. He started his string of three straight all-state selections by hitting .405 as a sophomore, notching five wins and posting a 0.53 ERA.
Following his senior campaign and the 2008 MLB draft, Kalkowski starred in American Legion ball, going 9-1 with a 1.15 ERA and two no-hitters. He added a .506 average, ten homers, 63 RBI, 66 runs, and 17 steals over that summer.
Like Kalkowski, Zastryzny has evolved into one of his team’s most important players. Zastryzny is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts, striking out 25 and walking just eight. He leads the Tigers in strikeouts and innings pitched, and he’s tied for the team lead in wins and starts. He is second on the team, and first among starters, in ERA.
After just three starts, Zastryzny was impressive enough to take over the role of Missouri’s Friday starter, a slot normally reserved for a team’s top pitcher. College Baseball Daily recently named him one of the top “impact freshmen” in the Big 12.
After an outstanding prep career, the Tigers expected Zastryzny would become the squad’s top pitcher – though perhaps not this fast. One of the top high school pitchers in the state of Texas in 2010, he was named an All-American by both ESPN RISE Magazine and MaxPreps. He was nearly perfect in his senior season for Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, posting a 16-1 record and 0.40 ERA. Zastryzny was also one of the top strikeout pitchers in the country, registering 190 punch-outs in only 104 innings. He added 11 shutouts and 15 complete games on his way to being named Corpus Christi Caller-Times South Texas Pitcher of the Year.
For good measure, Zastryzny was also dangerous at the plate, batting .405 with nine homers, 46 runs, and 47 RBI as a senior. He helped lead Calallen to the state championship game, and the school finished the season #14 in the ESPN RISE Fab 50 national high school rankings.
Zastryzny’s senior success wasn’t unprecedented, however. He went 9-4 with a 2.25 ERA as a junior, striking out 98 in 71 innings to earn all-district and all-South Texas honors. He added his first career perfect game in the playoffs, striking out nine in five innings as the Wildcats run-ruled a bi-district clincher.
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Zastryzny helped lead Calallen to a state title in 2008 as a sophomore.
Kalkowski and Zastryzny join the McNeese State trio of Lee Orr, Seth Granger and Jaden Dillon on the 2011 Pump Jacks roster.
The Jacks open the 2011 season on June 1 in Victoria. The team returns to East Texas for the home opener on Monday, June 6, in another championship rematch against the Generals. The complete 60-game schedule is available here.
Pump Jacks season tickets are available now, and at new, lower prices! Cal State Northridge senior Ridge Carpenter only has one thing he’d change about his collegiate career.
“I wish everyone who plays baseball could experience what it’s like to play Division I,” he said. “The traveling, staying in hotels, playing against such good teams, I don’t even know how to describe it, but it’s something I wish everyone could experience.”
Two years playing at Hartnell Community College has made Carpenter appreciate his two seasons at Cal State Northridge. The left-handed hitting outfielder has also taken advantage of the opportunity, starting in 70 of 74 games.

Bellak Named Dubois County Bombers’ Field Manager
Posted by Andrew on 1:08 AM
From the Prospect League
The Dubois County Bombers are pleased to announce that Grant Bellak has been selected as field manager for the 2011 season. Bellak is currently an assistant coach at Concordia University in Chicago, and has been an assistant coach for the Bombers the past two summers. He holds a B.A. degree in education from Webster University, and specializes in outfield play, middle infield play, hitting, and base running.
As a collegiate player he had a career batting average of .310, played on three teams that were nationally ranked, and finished in the top ten nationally in stolen bases his sophomore year. As a player and coach his collegiate teams have averaged over 30 wins each season, and his teams have qualified for post-season play in five of the last six seasons.
John Bigness, principal owner and director of the Bombers, has these comments about Bellak’s hiring: “Grant's been with us the past two summers as our top assistant and he was one of several candidates we interviewed for this position. Chris Barney, Gary Freymiller, and I were very deliberate in coming to a decision, and in the end, we felt Grant's experience in the league, enthusiasm, and commitment to a baseball coaching career was a great fit for us. He's smart, dedicated, passionate, and well organized. He let us know in no uncertain terms that he wanted the job, and I think that's really important. He's not a big yeller and screamer, but more of a teacher who can be vocal if needed. I'm excited for him and the Bombers. I think he will represent us well on the field and in the community.”
“I’m very excited about this opportunity to return to Dubois County and I look forward bringing an exciting atmosphere back to League Stadium,” says Bellak. “This [2011] team has something to prove. We don't have the big time schools on our roster, but what we do have is a quality group of guys who will play with a chip on their shoulder. Not only do they want to prove something, but they also want to put a product on the field that the residents of Dubois County and the fans of the Bombers can be proud of.”
The Dubois County Bombers are members of the summer collegiate Prospect League. They play a 56-game league schedule, with their first game to be played on June 2nd at League Stadium in Huntingburg. Information about tickets and promotional opportunities are available at www.dcbombers.com, or by calling 812-683-3700.

Copperheads Add Four from the Carolinas
Posted by Andrew on 2:57 PM
From the CPL
The Asheboro Copperheads have added four players to their 2011 roster from the Carolinas, including a left-handed pitcher from the nationally-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels who appeared in 10 of the team’s first 22 games this season and limited opposing hitters to a .063 batting average.
The latest additions to the Copperheads’ roster are Tate Parrish from UNC (pictured L-R, courtesy of respective schools Sports Information offices), catcher John Fidanza from Coastal Carolina, and two players from Gardner-Webb University, outfielder Adam McFarland and right-handed pitcher Jeff Howell.
Parrish, a 6-foot, 170-pounder from Smithfield, has already proven valuable as a situational reliever for the Tar Heels. Through March 22, Parrish had posted a 1.69 ERA and given up just one hit in his 10 appearances.
Fidanza, also a freshman, started 15 of Coastal’s first 21 games behind the plate and nailed five of the first nine runners attempting to steal. Offensively, he has been a bit inconsistent thus far as a collegian, but put up impressive numbers as a high school senior in Kentucky, belting 14 home runs. His father is a former professional player and now works with the Houston Astros.
McFarland is a 6-0, 170-pound junior outfielder at Gardner-Webb who last summer led the New York Collegiate Baseball League in hits. So far this spring, he has helped the Bulldogs get off their best start in the school’s D-I history (14-4) by posting a .343 average with 21 RBIs through the first 18 games. McFarland grew up near the G-W campus in Boling Springs and played American Legion ball in Shelby.
Also playing a key role for the Bulldogs this spring is Howell, who appeared in 10 of the first 18 games out of the bullpen and posted a 2-0 record with a 3.95 ERA. A 6-1, 190-pounder, Howell hails from Kings Mountain.

The Asheboro Copperheads have added four players to their 2011 roster from the Carolinas, including a left-handed pitcher from the nationally-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels who appeared in 10 of the team’s first 22 games this season and limited opposing hitters to a .063 batting average.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro freshman is no stranger to playing at “The Swamp”. He made his first appearance during the SwampDogs Fall Baseball League in 2005. In 2010 he returned, this time to participate in the 3rd Annual Sandhills Senior Showcase All-Star Game. The 2010 Cape Fear Valley Player of the Year went 7-1 with a 0.46 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 45 innings. As a freshman at UNCG Browne looks to continue his success he found while playing for Gray’s Creek.
“It’s a great feeling when you get to see kids mature on the field,” SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman said. “To see Brandon’s progress from the fall league through the high school all star game is a tremendous opportunity. We look for Brandon to be very successful in front of the home town crowd as me make a push for the Petitt Cup this year.”

Marlins add Two Veteran ‘Sunshine State’ Pitchers

From the CPL
The Morehead City Marlins Baseball Team announced today the signings of junior right-handed pitchers Aaron Arboleya and Christian Malbrough (pictured L-R, courtesy of http://www.fiusports.com), both from Florida International University.
As an integral part of the Florida International University’s rotation in 2010, Aaron Arboleya looks to use his experiences wherever the Panthers may need him. This season, Arboleya has already seen seven appearances out of the bullpen to the tune of a 4.32 ERA while holding his competition to a .233 batting average. With a 1-1 record on the season after 17 games, the Miramar, FL native has struck out eight batters, while only walking three in 8.1 innings. Arboleya is currently majoring in physical education.
Another member of the Panthers’ pitching squad will make the trip to Morehead City this summer. Christian Malbrough, a native from Bourg, LA, will also make an impact on the mound for the Marlins. Malbrough has seen limited time on the rubber for the FIU bullpen, but has been quite impressive by striking out seven hitters in only 3.1 innings. Malbrough is currently pursuing a degree in general studies.
“Both Aaron and Christian can fill really important roles with our team,” said Marlins Manager Jay Bergman. “Either player can start or relieve and will provide quality innings throughout the summer.”
Florida International University, a division I team, participates in the Sun Belt Conference. A season ago, the Panthers baseball team rattled off five-straight games in the double-elimination conference tournament to earn SBC championship for the first time since 1999. The team would eventually earn a NCAA Regional berth appearance for their accomplishments and ultimately finished the season with a 36-25 record. With a great start in 2011, the 12-5 FIU baseball team stands to retain their conference championship.

Former Tobs Broadcasters Now in Triple-A

From the CPL
Former Wilson Tobs broadcasters Darren Headrick and J.P. Shadrick (pictured L-R, courtesy of the Oklahoma City RedHawks) have landed together as the broadcast team for the Oklahoma City RedHawks, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.
All RedHawks games will be broadcasted on AM 1340 The Game. 1340 The Game will air all 144 regular season games live, beginning 30 minutes before the first pitch with “RedHawks On-Deck.” Game audio will also be available through the station website stream at 1340thegame.com and on mobile devices through the Clear Channel iheartradio application, a free download.
Shadrick, a veteran baseball broadcaster begins his first season as “Voice of the RedHawks,” moving to Oklahoma City after five seasons with the Double-A Jacksonville Suns (Marlins). Shadrick was voted the Southern League’s Radio Broadcaster of the Year in 2008 and also has television production experience with CBS Sports and the Big Ten Network.
“1340 The Game is a perfect flagship for RedHawks radio and the team’s commitment to unsurpassed customer service,” Shadrick said. “With all 144 games live on one solid signal, combined with the internet stream and mobile device capabilities, fans have never had easier access to the RedHawks broadcast.”
Meanwhile, Headrick joins the RedHawks radio team as pre-game and post-game host, producing feature stories and providing scoreboard updates while presenting highlights from other games around baseball. Among other outlets, Headrick has on-air experience with the Tennessee Volunteers Radio Network and the Double-A Tennessee Smokies (Cubs).
“We are extremely proud of our partnership with the RedHawks and Mandalay Baseball,” Clear Channel Market Manager Bill Hurley said. “The RedHawks will produce quality broadcasts that fans will absolutely enjoy.”
Shadrick was the voice of the Wilson Tobs on CPL WebPass during the 2004 season, while Headrick called Tobs game this past summer season.
“Being a part of the rich heritage of the Golden Leaf Radio Network and the Wilson Tobs was a great experience,” said Headrick. “With (former Tobs gm) Ben Jones, (assistant gm) Chip Pruden and help from our local radio affiliate, I feel we always had a broadcast to be proud of. The CPL Webpass provides an excellent chance for any aspiring broadcaster to get a taste of professional baseball. While I will miss the people of Wilson and the friends I have made, I am very excited about this opportunity with the Oklahoma City Redhawks.”
The 2011 Oklahoma City RedHawks radio broadcast debuts March 29 with the broadcast of the Houston Astros-RedHawks exhibition game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with “RedHawks On-Deck” beginning at 6:00.
