DUTCHMEN WELCOME BACK THREE MEMBERS OF PITCHING STAFF

From the Albany Dutchmen
As the Albany Dutchmen begin to unveil their roster for the upcoming 2011 season, three familiar names adorn the list of incoming talent. This years pitching staff will contain three holdovers from last season: local Siena right-handers Justin Brantley and CJ Sohl, as well as Trinity University righty, Tanner Barron.

Sohl was one of the mainstays in the Dutchmen bullpen during the 2010 season, making fourteen apperances and leading the team with two saves. The 6'5" Albany native struck out 30 batters in 29 innings, while walking only fourteen. He was also valuable in middle relief for Siena during his Sophomore season. Sohl appeared in 19 games for Siena, getting wins over Brown and Rhode Island and also setting career highs in strikeouts with four in relief against both Central Florida and Holy Cross where he allowed just two hits in four-plus innings of work. His presence on the roster enables the Dutchmen to employ him as a versatile asset out the bullpen both in long relief and in tight, late-inning situations.

His Siena teammate, Justin Brantley was a starter for the Dutchmen throughout the entire summer, leading them with eight starts. Although his performance was inconsistent, his unorthodox delivery and incredible movement on his pitches led last years Assistant Coach, Nick Vera to claim that Brantley could be the best pitcher in the league with a bit more seasoning. Brantley began to gain that consistency at the end of his Freshman season, pitching Siena to May wins against Saint Peter's and Fairfield as the team was pushing for a playoff berth. He continued to impress this fall, as Coach Rossi proclaims on the teams website that he expects this to be a breakout season for the lanky 5'10" pound righty who will undoubtedly be a consistent presence in the Dutchmen rotation.

Joining the Siena teammates for a second go-round in Albany is Trinity University (TX) right-hander Tanner Barron. The Houston, TX native spent time in the bullpen as well as the rotation during his first stint with the Dutchmen, compiling a 2-2 record, while striking out 35 and wlaking 15 in 35-plus innings. Barron was equally impressive in his Freshman season at the Division Three powerhouse, notching a 2-0 record and leading the team with two saves, while holding a 3.86 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 16-plus innings. The lanky righty will provide the Dutchmen with incredible versatility as well as his infectious, laid-back off-field personality.

Stay tuned as the Dutchmen continue to announce the rest of their 2011 roster for the inaugural season of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.

Johnson Getting Crack at the Bigs

From the WMBL
A former core member of the Lethbridge Bulls is getting another opportunity with a Major League organization.

Jay Johnson was a major part of the Lethbridge Bulls success in the 2007 and 2008 seasons, as a left-handed pitcher and first baseman. He was one of two Johnson brothers to play in the WMBL, as his older brother Aaron played with Lethbridge in 2006-07, and was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers out of the University of Illinois.

In a 2 year WMBL career with the Bulls, younger brother Jay was a .294 hitter in 54 games at the plate, with 2 homeruns, 11 doubles, and 31 RBI. It was on the mound where he carried the most value however. Johnson compiled 20 career appearances in Lethbridge as a left-handed reliever, spanning 27 innings of work. In that time he allowed just 26 hits and 11 walks while striking out 26 batters and maintaining a 3.33 ERA.

“Danville Dans fans will be treated to 28 home games this season,” said Dans managing partner Jeanie Cooke. “We’ve got a great mix of weekend and weekday games for the whole family to enjoy.”

The Dans open the 2011 season Thursday, June 2 on the road against division rival Terre Haute. New Assistant General Manager Joins Copperheads

From Ben Strunk and the Southern Ohio Copperheads
The Southern Ohio Copperheads welcome Patrick Villafane as their new Assistant General Manager (GM). Villafane will relieve current Assistant General Manager Jessie Martin at the end of Ohio University’s Spring Quarter.

The Assistant GM position is a two-year commitment that coincides with Ohio University’s Masters of Sports Administration graduate program. Villafane will shadow Martin up until her spring graduation and will then take charge of the organization during the Snakes’ summer season. He will be responsible for hiring and training staff, selling corporate sponsorships, and ensuring that game day operations run smoothly.

Villafane graduated from the University of Georgia (located in Athens, GA) in International Business with a focus in Finance. “I just loved Athens so much that I decided to try out a second one,” he said.

Born in Bitburg, Germany, Villafane lived in Virginia, Colorado, and Florida before finally calling Georgia home. After college, he worked as a financial planner for two years, but quickly realized that his passion was truly in sports. A friend and mentor recommended Ohio University’s sports graduate program and Villafane decided that Athens, Ohio had the most to offer.

An avid Atlanta Braves fan, Villafane is excited to lead the Copperheads this summer. “During the first summer of my MBA year, my classmates and I visited a few Copperheads games,” he said. “I was amazed by how much fun everybody seemed to be having and how good of a job Jessie Martin and her staff did of bringing fans into the gates and showing them a good time. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn about the business of baseball while having a blast during the summer. When I heard that the Copperheads were hiring, I jumped at the chance!”

The new Assistant GM says he wants to continue building on the Copperheads success. “First and foremost, I want to make sure that everyone has fun and works together to create the best possible experience for our fans. I also believe that student attendance is key to our success and hope to get students to games as well as local residents. Let's bring in 12,000 attendees and have another playoff run!”

Villafane looks at the Copperheads as a stepping stone to a career in professional sports. “After graduation, I see myself working in Corporate Sponsorships for an MLB or NFL team,” he said. “I hope to make it back to my roots in the South but am also excited about the possibilities of living and working in other parts of the country. The skills I learn from working with the Copperheads will make me a more well-rounded individual and teach me valuable skills in regards to personnel management, marketing, promotions, and sponsorship sales. Let's get ready for a great season!”

Nine to Notice

From the NECBL
Photos (l to r): Riordan, Mastroianni, Rizzoti, Bogusevic

“Spring Training” carries the notion of baseball at its most relaxed: lazy games that “mean nothing” played in intimate parks. For many Northeasterners, a migration to Phoenix or Florida in March is the first time in months that they can bask carefree in the sun. Ballplayers seem to shed their mask of intensity, instead being much more generous in posing for photos and signatures.

Make no mistake however. For many players, Spring Training is where jobs are made or lost. These five to six weeks can cause a player to achieve a lifelong dream...or lose a job.

It can be difficult to monitor the late innings of Grapefruit or Cactus League games, when #82 pitches to #64. But here are nine NECBL alumni on 40-man rosters worth watching. Six have no Major League experience; the other three have made the Bigs but just for a cup of coffee. For these nine, a successful March just might yield something for which they’ve worked their entire lives: a permanent spot in The Show.

Pump Jacks Slash Ticket Prices

From the East Texas Pump Jacks

For three seasons, the East Texas Pump Jacks bucked the trend in sports and never once raised ticket prices. As the team enters its fourth season, the Pump Jacks have finally decided to make a change: ticket prices are going down.

It’s a decision that bears repeating: Pump Jacks ticket prices will be cut for the 2011 season.

The Jacks announced today that Lower Box seat tickets will now cost $8 per game, and Upper Box seats will go for $6 per game. Grandstand tickets will remain $5 for adults and $4 for children and seniors.

For the first three years, Lower Box seats were priced at $10 and Upper Box seats were $8.

“For three years, the Pump Jacks have been the best family-friendly entertainment in East Texas,” said general manager Mike Lieberman. “Now, we’re more affordable than ever, and anyone can enjoy the best seats in the house for less.”

The Pump Jacks will continue to offer in-your-seat wait service for the Lower Box seats even with the $8 ticket price, making it perhaps the least expensive such seats in all of sports. Pump Jacks box seats are still standalone armed chairs, making them more comfortable and movable than typical flip-down stadium seats.

With the drop in ticket prices, season tickets will cost less as well. Lower Box seat season tickets will now cost just $199 for the entire season, and Upper Box seats have dropped to $150 for season tickets. With last week’s announcement that the Pump Jacks will play 30 home games this summer, season tickets are now a better deal than ever before.

Grandstand season tickets remain $105 for adults and $85 for children and seniors, even with the longer season.

All season ticket holders still become members of the Pump Jacks Premier Club, providing perks not available to other fans. Premier Club members can exchange any unused season tickets for another game through the team’s Never A Wasted Ticket policy, ensuring that ticket holders get the most out of their season tickets. Premier Club members are also invited to the exclusive Meet the Pump Jacks event, an opportunity to mix and mingle with the Jacks’ players and coaches.

To make purchasing season tickets even easier, fans have the option of the EZ Pay plan. With EZ Pay, fans make an initial payment of just 25% of their order when they purchase their season tickets. The Pump Jacks will then charge 25% in each of the next three months, paying off the entire cost of the season tickets. Fans don’t have to deal with invoices and mailing in payments, either, since the Jacks will simply charge their card each month. To take advantage of the EZ Pay plan, fans can check the EZ Pay box on the season ticket order form, or request the EZ Pay plan when speaking with a Pump Jacks representative.

Purchasing season tickets is easy. Simply call the Pump Jacks at (903) 218-GO ET, or e-mail the Jacks at tickets@pumpjacksbaseball.com. Season tickets can also be conveniently purchased online through the Pump Jacks store at www.pumpjacksbaseball.com. More information is available here, along with a downloadable season ticket order form.

The Pump Jacks last week announced the team’s 2011 season schedule, which can be viewed here. The team will be making more announcements in the coming weeks, including information about new ticket packages and the Jacks’ players and coaching staff. Stingers continue to build roster

From the Willmar Stingers
WILLMAR, MN- A team can never have enough pitching, especially when the schedule calls for 70 games in 75 days as it does for the 2011 Willmar Stingers. The Stingers are currently building this year’s roster with that mentality in mind. Two of the three recently signed players for the Stingers will be called on to play multiple roles this summer.

“Last year we had one or two guys that could do both (play a position and pitch) but this year we’re recruiting more dual players to give us extra depth on the mound.” Co-owner Marc Jerzak said. “Even though we typically sign 15 pitchers, it gives a team an edge down the stretch.”

Sophomore infielder John Haberman (Pacific University) and freshman infielder Jake Stinnett (University of Maryland) both plan to play a significant role as a position player and pitcher this summer.

“These guys will more than likely come out of the bullpen, but could also be a spot starter from time to time.” Fielder Manger Matt Hollod said. “We look to these guys as being impact position players first but we’ll also need them on the mound as well.”

Hollod is familiar with this role as a college player as he pitched and played first base for the University of Washington and University of Portland. He also was a dual player for the Grand Forks Channel Cats of the Northwoods League in 1999 and 2000.

Haberman, a 6 foot 1 inch, 220 lbs. left-hander appeared in 42 games during his freshman campaign, making 39 starts as the Tigers' designated hitter. To go along with his .359 On-Base Percentage, and his .404 Slugging Percentage, he also hit an impressive .321 in 156 at-bats. In 20 1/3 innings as a pitcher in 2010, he struck out 17 hitters and his performance on the mound against No. 19 ranked Stanford earned him Big West Pitcher of the Week honors.

Stinnett, a 6 foot 4 inch 200 lbs. right-hander will make his collegiate debut today against the University of Texas. Stinnett plans to see time at third base and on the mound.

The third Stinger signed this week is Bradley University sophomore short stop Jason Leblebijian pronounced LEB-leh-BEE-zhin. Leblebijian, a 6 foot 1 inch 185 lbs. right-handed hitting infielder had a .323 batting average for Bradley last year, which was the second highest of all freshman in the Valley Conference. Even though his offensive numbers were stellar last year, he’s best known for his defensive. The slick-fielding shortstop only had eight errors in 47 games for the Braves.

Opening Night for the Stingers is at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1st against the Thunder Bay Border Cats at Bill Taunton Stadium. The Stingers are members of the largest summer collegiate league in the country. More than 160 players were drafted into professional baseball in 2010 from the Northwoods League. Season tickets for the 2011 season are $149 for reserved seat backs and $169 for box seat season tickets. For more information regarding the roster and upcoming season, please call 320-222-2010.

Mallards sign pair of teammates from the University of Tennessee-Martin

From the Madison Mallards
Madison, WI – February 18, 2011. The Madison Mallards have signed a pair of University of Tennessee-Martin teammates for the 2011 season in junior outfielder Jordan Owen and sophomore pitcher Dan Tobik.

More details about each player can be found below.

Jordan Owen, OF, Throws: R, Hits: R, 6’0”, 196 lbs (University of Tennessee-Martin)

A junior outfielder from Kansas City, Missouri, Owen hit .326 (70-for-215) with 14 doubles, a team-high and school record 18 home runs, and 51 RBI a year ago for UT-Martin. Last summer, while playing for New Market in the wood-bat Valley League based in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, he was named an All-Star after hitting .345 with eight doubles, three home runs, and 22 RBI. Owen made an impact right away as he recorded five hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning in an opening night victory.

As a freshman at UT-Martin, he started 43 games in right field while batting .269 with 12 doubles, four home runs, and 28 RBI. Owen did not commit an error all season in 92 chances. He also made 10 appearances on the mound and finished the season with a 1-0 record and one recorded save.

Mallards Field Manager Greg Labbe is excited to have Owen’s previous summer league experience rub off on his teammates in Madison.

“Jordan had some of the best numbers in the country last year as a sophomore and I would expect that type of production again this season,” said Labbe.

“I love to add guys to a roster who have had previous success in the summer hitting with wood and Jordan is one of those guys. He is a tough competitor and will bring a lot of confidence and previous success; but I know he still feels like he has something to prove.”

Dan Tobik, RHP, Throws: R, Hits: R, 6’4”, 196 lbs (University of Tennessee-Martin)

A sophomore right-handed pitcher from Ballwin, Missouri, Tobik was 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA over 22 appearances, including three starts, last season for UT-Martin. He proved to be a reliable reliever as he was second on the team in innings pitched (67) and strikeouts (59). Tobik was a three-sport (football, basketball, and baseball) athlete at Parkway West High School. His father Dan played in the major leagues for eight seasons (1978-85) with the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, and the Seattle Mariners.

“Tobik was one of the best pitchers in the Ohio Valley Conference last season as a freshman,” said Labbe.

“When you can continually add arms that could be front-of-the-line starters or closers I think that makes you tough to beat. Dan has the physical and mental ability to be a game-changer for us this summer.”

The Madison Mallards are members of the 16-team summer collegiate Northwoods League and will play a 70-game schedule in the new-and-improved “Duck Pond” beginning on Opening Day, June 7th against the Wisconsin Woodchucks at 7:05 p.m.
