Four Questions With Adam Izokovic

Adam Izokovic is currently a junior rhp from Gardner-Webb University. He hails from Lawndale, NC and he attended Burns High School. Top Performers From 2010--Mike Mandarino

My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Mike Mandarino of the Southampton Breakers. Mike is currently a junior IF/P from Cumberland University. He is 6-1/210 pounds and he hails from Massapequa, NY. He attended both Camden County College and Brevard CC before enrolling at NAIA Cumberland.

Mike spent this summer playing for the Southampton Breakers of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. While it's no secret that the top players flock to the Cape Cod League, Mike may have just turned in one of the best summer's while playing for the Breakers. He was the quintessential two-way player this past season. He was effective both as a pitcher and offensively, most his pitching is what made him famous in the ACBL.

He went just 4-3, but he sported an 0.83 era in 54 innings pitched. He allowed just 41 hits in his 8 starts. He also had a tremendous bb/k ratio of 17/41 on the summer. That translates into a K/9 inp number of 6.83. As mentioned earlier, he made 8 starts for the Breakers. He completed a whopping 4 of those starts and he pitched 1 shutout on the summer.  All of this led the league to name him the Pitcher of the Year in the ACBL.

Offensively, Mike was also the best hitter on the team. He hit .303 in 109 at-bats. He scored 15 runs, knocked in 16 and he also hit 6 doubles. Amazingly, he was tied for first in the league with 7 home runs this past summer.

One coach of an opposing team in the ACBL said this about Mike:
"He is just one heck of a player, he was the most outstanding pitcher, and he was a tough out as a hitter. He is just a complete player, and it was a pleasure to watch him compete."

Here are his stats from this past summer.

  • 4-3

Sweets Sign Pair of Bison for Second Season

From the Walla Walla Sweets
WALLA WALLA, Wa. – A pair of North Dakota State University Bison will make the journey west from Fargo, N. Dak. to Walla Walla, Wash., as they’ve signed to play for the Sweets for the 2011 West Coast League season. Simon Anderson, a pitcher from Bemidji, Minn., will join Zach Wentz, an infielder/pitcher from Bismarck, N. Dak., in Eastern Washington following the completion of their collegiate season at North Dakota State.

Wentz, a junior, has been the leading performer for the Bison over his first two seasons. His 5-2 (5-1 as a starter) record and contributions at the plate in 2010 landed him a spot on the all-Summit League second team. The ESPN Academic All-American second team selection hit .389 while starting in all but one of the Bison’s 52-game season, including 7 HR and 42 RBI. As a freshman in 2009, the Bismarck Century High School product hit .349 with 3 HR and 25 RBI while starting all 43 games.

“Zach matured very quickly after leaving high school and attending North Dakota State,” said Sweets manager, J.C. Biagi, who played against North Dakota State during his college days at Centenary. “We’re looking forward to him showing the same speed in maturation when he switches over to wood bats for the Sweets this summer.”

Anderson, a sophomore, was named team MVP for baseball and Male Athlete of the Year as a senior at Bemidji High School following a three-year starting career in which he was also the starting center for the basketball team and quarterback for the football team. The 6-foot 5-inch, 215 pounder was named first team all-Section in football. As a freshman in 2010 for the Bison, Anderson saw limited action, pitching in 11.1 innings over 7 games.

“Simon performed well in high school and his brother has done well for North Dakota State as their leading pitcher last season,” said Sweets’ pitching coach, Mark Michaud. “All signs point to Simon being a quality pitcher this year for the Bison and this summer for the Sweets.”

North Dakota State opens 2011 play on February 18 with a three-game series at Arizona. The Bison will play their first 17 games – and 26 of their first 29 games – on the road.

Loggers Lock Up Trio from FGCU

From the La Crosse Loggers
LA CROSSE, WI – The La Crosse Loggers Baseball Club continued their relationship with the Florida Gulf Coast baseball program today when they officially announced the signing of catcher Mike Reeves and pitchers Alex Diaz and Brandon Bixler to their 2011 roster.

Reeves, a sophomore backstop, will be returning for his second season in Logger green after enjoying a very successful freshman campaign at FGCU and playing a big role for the 2010 Loggers. Last spring, the left-handed hitting catcher hit .301 with two home runs and 21 RBI’s over 27 games before suffering a season-ending injury (broken thumb). Reeves started 24 games behind the plate as the Eagles starting catcher including handling a pitching staff that featured former Logger and 2010 first-round pick Chris Sale (White Sox).

The Peterborough, Ontario (Canada) native was a regular in the Loggers lineup last summer as well. In 56 games, Reeves hit .239 with a pair of home runs and 17 RBI’s over 176 at-bats and was able to show off his strong arm later in the summer when he returned behind the plate. Reeves’ 176 at-bats tied him for the fourth most on the Loggers 2010 squad.

Reeves is also a former MLB draft pick, having been selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 42nd round of the 2009 draft.

Like teammate Mike Reeves, freshman Alex Diaz is another Eagle that spurned professional baseball out of high school in favor of competing at FGCU. Diaz, a 6-2, 185 pound right-handed pitcher/shortstop was selected in the 40th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals before opting to attend college. Diaz is expected to utilize his lively fastball and be a big part of the Eagle bullpen next spring and also has the ability to be a plus defender at shortstop.

Joining Reeves and Diaz will be southpaw Brandon Bixler, an Oviedo, Fla. native. Like Diaz, Bixler is another freshman expected to be a big part of the Eagle pitching staff next spring as he has the ability to pitch both as a starter and out of the bullpen. The 5-10, 160 pound left-hander has an upper 80’s fastball with excellent command.

Reeves, Diaz, Bixler and the rest of the 2011 Loggers will open their 2011 campaign on June 1 at Green Bay as part of a three-game set. The 2011 home opener will pit the Loggers against the Madison Mallards on Saturday, June 6 with first pitch at The Lumber Yard set for 6:05 p.m.

Top Performers From 2010--Colby Holmes

My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Colby Holmes of the Florence RedWolves. Colby is a 5-11/200 pound rhp from the University of South Carolina. He hails from Conway, SC and he attended Conway High School. He was rated as the 7th best prospect in the state by Perfect Game. The Atlanta Braves selected him in the 47th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. It looks like his decision to attend South Carolina paid off, as he was a midweek start for the Gamecocks and he picked up a NCAA Championship ring with South Carolina.

Colby spent this past summer pitching for the Florence RedWolves of the Coastal Plain League. While his summer numbers might not have placed him among the CPL leaders, all he did was become the Wolves staff ace  and solidified him as being a pitcher to keep an eye out for.

Colby went just 3-3, but had a remarkable 1.18 era in 45.2 innings pitched. He allowed just 27 hits and held opponents to a .174 batting average. He appeared in 8 games, started 6 of those games, and he completed 1 of them. He also had a very nice bb/k ratio of 22/40 this summer.

For his performance this summer, Perfect Game ranked Colby as the 37th best prospect in the league. The following is from the PG scouting report on him:
"Midweek starter as FR for CWS champs, became staff ace this summer, FB 88-90 mph, throws CH, good breaking ball."

Here are his stats from the 2010 summer season.

  • 3-3

The Dutchmen are excited to have Vega, whose entering his second season as the Pitching Coach for the Paradise Valley Community College Pumas, a Junior College in Phoenix, Arizona.

In his first season as pitching coach, Vega led a staff that compiled a 2.75 ERA and helped the Pumas win 42 games en route to the JUCO Division Two World Series, where they finished fifth. Manny successfully guided a staff that included many players who will move onto big time Division One programs like the University of Utah, Ohio State and Texas A&M.

With only one more coaching position to fill, the Dutchmen are growing closer to rounding out the unit that will take the field in Albany come June of 2011.

Johnson ready to fill big shoes as new Tobs coach

From the American Chronicle
By Tom Ham, The Wilson Daily Times, N.C.
Dec. 22--Bruce Johnson is well aware that, pardon the cliche, he has big shoes to fill.

As the new head coach of the Wilson Tobs of the summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League, the 24-year-old Johnson succeeds the franchise's winningest head coach, Jeff Steele.

Fryer, Tirri, Noordsy to Add Local Flavor to Golden Eagles

From Keith Harrington at the Adirondack Sports
Looking out your window right now, with Christmas day in your rear view mirror and a winter snow storm looming, basbeall is probably the the furthest thing from your mind. For the Glens Falls Golden Eagles though, planning for the 2011 baseball season is well under way. Besides moving to the Perfect Game Baseball League this year, the Golden Eagles haved signed three players who will bring a local flavor to the team, and hopefully more local fans to East Field, according to President Darin Williams.

One player local fans should be familiar with is Neil Fryer of Greenwich. Fryer is a freshman at Siena for Coach Toni Rossi. Fryer led Greenwich High School to Section II and State Regional crowns last spring, as the Witches advanced to the New York State Tournament. Fryer is a 6’1, 205 pound right handed pitcher.

Also suiting up for the Golden Eagles this summer will Mike Tirri of Lake George. Tirri, a junior plays college baseball for Coach Jon Mueller’s UAlbany Great Danes. In 2010, Tirri, appeared in 39 games, starting 36. The first baseman finished with a .225 batting average, 4 home runs and 17 rbi.

Finally, the Golden Eagles have signed former Glens Falls High School standout Peter Noordsy. Noordsy is a junior left handed pitcher for the Wofford Terriers. Noordsy missed 2009 while recovering from elbow surgery. Last spring Noordsy appeared in 25 games, finishing with a record of 2-4 with 22 strikeouts and 23 walks in 30.2 innings pitched.

Keep visiting Adirondack SportsNet for more on these three local standouts who will display their talents with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles this summer.

Eagle Eye: Don’t forget about the Glens Falls Golden Eagles Hot Stove Banquet, feturing former New York Met Howard “HoJo” Johnson. The banquet will be held in the Ballroom of the Great Escape Lodge on January 15th. Cocktails at 6:00 pm. Buffet at 7:00 pm. Hojo will be signing autographs. Tickets are $40.00 and can be purchased by calling 518-260-4786, or by emailing jhodges@glensfallsgoldeneagles.com.

Florida League Bringing Baseball Back to Winter Haven in 2011

From the FCSL
It's official; the Florida League will be bringing baseball back to the city of Winter Haven in 2011. The Winter Haven Loggerheads have signed on to be the Florida League's sixth team. This will expand the current setup to six teams and allows the league to extend its offerings of great baseball talent to another part of Central Florida.

The Loggerheads will play at Chain of Lakes Field in Winter Haven, the former Cleveland Indian's spring training site. The park received its name from the surrounding lakes, which can be seen from the top seats in the grandstand. It is a gorgeous facility and the Florida League is proud to add it to our already great lineup of stadiums. The Loggerheads team received its name from the large concentration of Loggerhead sea turtles found along Florida's coasts. It provides an excellent mix of creativity and name recognition and will bring an exciting new mascot to the league, a loggerhead turtle named Clutch.

The Loggerheads will be owned and operated by the Starting 9 Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The President of the Starting 9, Eddie Welling, is extremely excited about becoming part of the Florida League. Welling remarked, "The Starting 9 Foundation is thrilled to be joining the Florida League and bringing summer baseball back to Winter Haven. With all the great baseball resources in the state of Florida and the terrific baseball fan base in the Winter Haven community, it was only a matter of how and when. Thanks to the great efforts by the City of Winter Haven, Florida League President Sara Whiting and Vice President Rob Sitz, we look forward to recruiting the nation's top baseball talent to Winter Haven for the summer of 2011."

This will provide an opportunity for 27 more quality college baseball players to fine-tune their skill sets in the Florida League.

Rex, Winkle leading Prospect League in player development

From the Prospect League
Jason Winkle wears many hats.

He is the chief executive officer of WinkleCorp, which he describes as "a leadership and human performance consulting company," he is an associate dean of the College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services at Indiana State University and he is founder and director of the Center for Leadership Development, which is also associated with the CNHHS at ISU.

And Dr. Winkle isn't slowing planning on slowing down any time soon. His latest hat is a Terre Haute Rex baseball cap.

Winkle describes his role with the Rex as "team professional development specialist . . . and huge fan!" Through the team's association with ISU (the Rex are owned by the Indiana State Foundation through Sycamore Holdings), Winkle partnered with the organization in its inaugural season to help players develop professional and leadership skills aimed at helping them throughout baseball and life.

"I will be working with the players and the coaches in various areas, including leadership development, personal excellence, performance mindset, character development and team building," Winkle said. "As with any developmental training, one key is consistency and frequency in working on specific skills. One of the goals of my interaction with the team is the development of skills that will help [the players] be successful in any endeavor they pursue, in sport and in life."

The Rex front office is excited about the professional development opportunities the organization can provide players through its partnership with Winkle. "Dr. Jason Winkle will be a great asset to our players and coaches," said Rex operations manager Casey DeGroote. "I hope our players can take advantage of what they have around them to become better athletes and citizens."

General manager Roland Shelton echoed DeGroote's sentiments. "Dr. Winkle brings a wealth of lifelong experiences, along with a great understanding of leadership development, that can only translate into a positive for our players," Shelton said. "We want our players to become professionals on and off the field and, with Dr. Winkle's process of developing leaders, our players will leave our system knowing additional steps for success."

Winkle said he would have a hard time picking one factor of working with the Rex that he will enjoy most. "I truly enjoy working with people in their professional development," he said. "In addition, I know the [Rex] coaches and am a fan of their coaching philosophy. They truly care about these young men and want them to be successful on and off the field. It is an honor to work with an organization that values growth and development of the whole person."

Top Performers From 2010--Casey Henn

My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Casey Henn of the Quincy Gems. Casey is a 6-0/180 pound junior pitcher from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He starred in both baseball and football at Colerain High School. Casey had a tremendous 2010 for the Raiders. He went a perfect 7-0, and had a 3.19 era in 84.2 innings pitched. He allowed 76 hits, gave up 20 walks and fanned 82 batters on the year.

Casey spent the summer of 2009 pitching for the Gems.  He was simply one of the best pitchers in the Prospect League that summer. He went 6-1, and had a 3.47 era in 59.2 innings pitched. He also fanned 55 on the summer. 2010 proved to be another banner year for Casey.

He went 4-1 and sported a nifty 1.49 era in 48.1 innings pitched. I'm most impressed that he allowed just 24 hits this summer. He also had a nice bb/k ratio of 15/46 for the Gems. His best start of year came on July 2nd against the Sliders.

From creating new baseball opportunities for youth players and young adults to hosting regional and national events at Fleming Stadium, our daily mission will be centered on building a network of player development for local high schools, area colleges and the Tobs. Groton OKs collegiate baseball plan

From the Day.com
Groton - It's a fact of baseball: When squads of collegiate all-stars take the field at Fitch High School this summer, one team will win and the other will lose.

But the plan to bring a new team to Groton is a "win-win" for the community, said Mayor Jim Streeter Tuesday night, when the Town Council gave final approval to a plan to bring a New England Collegiate Baseball League team to Groton this summer.

The deal is sweetened further by an anonymous donor, who is paying for about $500,000 in improvements to Fitch High's baseball field, creating a small stadium that will be home turf for a team for eight-week seasons each summer.

“We are one of the four,” confirmed Hoyt on Monday.

The FCBL is the brainchild of Lowell Spinners owner Drew Weber, who’s turned that Single-A team into one of the hottest minor-league properties in the country; and Chris Carminucci, who manages the independent Brockton Rox and whose Carminucci Sports Group is involved in their operation.
