SwampDogs Utilityman Jimmy Roesinger Looking To Make History On Friday Night
Posted by Andrew on 9:12 AM
From the Coastal Plain League
Fayetteville SwampDogs utilityman Jimmy Roesinger (Pictured: Photo Courtesy of Wanda West) is gearing up to try and accomplish a feat that very few players have in the game of baseball. On Friday, July 30th, during the SwampDogs final scheduled regular season home game of the 2010 season, Roesinger will look to play all nine positions on the field during the nine inning game.
“It’s something that myself and my fellow coaches have pondered during the season,” SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman remarked. “Jimmy is certainly capable of doing this. He has already played five of the positions and he has worked out at three of the other four. We wouldn’t try this if we didn’t think he could perform the task at any of the positions. He’s the true definition of a utilityman and he will get the chance to showcase his skills at each position. It’s also a chance for a great young man to make some history and leave his stamp in the league.”
Roesinger, a junior at the University of Dayton, has already played all outfield spots as well as third and second base for the SwampDogs. Playing shortstop should be no problem and the Indianapolis, IN native has worked out during the season at first base and catcher. In fact, Roesinger is the SwampDogs emergency catcher if the team runs out of original backstops during a game. The only true challenge that could be presented would be the pitching part of the nine positions in nine innings feat.
“We will try to save him to pitch in the later innings,” Handelsman said. “He will most likely only face one batter.”
If Roesinger is able to accomplish the tall task on Friday night, he will become the first player in Coastal Plain League History to play all nine positions in a nine inning game. In fact, extensive research found that only four major leaguers have played all nine positions in nine innings. The last to do so was Shane Halter of the Detroit Tigers on October 1st, 2000.
Friday night is Fan Appreciation Night at the ballpark with the final Healy Wholesale giveaway of the summer and prizes all game long. After the game, the last fireworks extravaganza of the summer will occur. Fans are encouraged to come out to “The Swamp” to enjoy a night of fun, fireworks and possibly a little bit of history in the last scheduled home game of the regular season. Gates open at 6 and first pitch is at 7:05.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Gems leave Sliders feeling Henn-pecked

From the Quincy Herald Whig
A lengthy layoff had Quincy Gems right-hander Casey Henn feeling a little rusty Monday night.
"I hadn't pitched in over a week because of rainouts," the Wright State product said.
It didn't show.
In his first start since July 17, Henn handcuffed the Springfield Sliders for six innings, allowing two hits and striking out six as the Gems earned a pivotal 4-0 victory at QU-Stadium.
The victory keeps Quincy (9-5) tied atop the Prospect League's Western Division standings with DeKalb County with the division champion earning a playoff spot. The Liners (10-6) visit QU-Stadium on Wednesday for a doubleheader.

Playoffs Shaping Up
Posted by Andrew on 10:06 AM
From the Western Major Baseball League
Tuesday will be an important day for teams in the West Division. In the East, it will be nothing more than a formality.
With the Western Major Baseball League playoffs starting on Friday, some matchups have already been decided, but still plenty is up in the air.
With one game remaining on their schedules, the Lethbridge Bulls and Medicine Hat Mavericks will fight for the number three seed in the West on Tuesday night, with Swift Current having clinched top spot crossing over from the Central, and Okotoks locked into the two position.
A win over the visiting Edmonton Prospects would give Lethbridge the three spot, and a date with Okotoks. A loss, however, and a win by Medicine Hat over the Dawgs would drop Lethbridge into the four slot and a date with Swift Current.
In the East, everything is already set.
Top seed Regina will take on Weyburn, with the series opening on Friday night in Regina. Game Two will be at Tom Laing Park in Weyburn on Saturday, with Game Three slated for Sunday night back at Currie Field.
In the other Eastern matchup, Moose Jaw will take on Melville. Times for that series have not yet been announced.

Y-D Supplants Cape Rival At No. 1
Posted by Andrew on 7:51 AM
From Perfect Game Crosschecker
In the five-year history of the PG CrossChecker summer baseball rankings, the Cape Cod League’s Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox are the only team to occupy the No. 1 spot every season.
The Red Sox won Cape Cod League championships in 2006 and 2007 to clinch the top spot both years, and were ranked No. 1 deep into the 2008 and 2009 seasons before suffering critical playoff losses that knocked them from the top spot.
This season, Y-D has been lurking near the top of the nation’s top 30 all season and finally moved to their accustomed No. 1 spot on the eve of the annual Cape Cod League all-star game (Wednesday at Boston’s Fenway Park). For the Red Sox to move into the top position, it took a four-game winning streak on their part that coincided with a four-game losing stretch by the Brewster Whitecaps, their counterparts in the Cape’s Eastern Division.
Brewster had been No. 1 since the outset of the 2010 summer season, and still have the most points in the Cape Cod standings (44, to 42 for Y-D), but have played two more games than Y-D. The loss of Louisiana State righthander Anthony Ranaudo, who did not allow an earned run in five starts for Brewster, was a crushing blow for the suddenly reeling Whitecaps.
Ranaudo was expected to be one of the top two or three picks in the 2010 draft, but encountered elbow problems in the spring at LSU and slid to the sandwich round, where he was selected by the Boston Red Sox. He spent time in the Cape this summer to demonstrate he was healthy, and cleared proved that, though his early departure left a huge void in the Brewster rotation.

Taylored for Perfection
Posted by Andrew on 7:45 AM
From the Coastal Plain League
Only 117 pitches is what it took for history to be made Thursday night at Buck Hardee Field. That’s what it took Zach Taylor - photo courtesy of Thomas Sherrill - (W, 3-1) to become the first pitcher in Coastal Plain League history to throw a perfect game in a 13-0 win over the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
Taylor’s night consisted of 13 ground-outs, 10 fly-out and four strikeouts to complete the historic feat. Taylor got plenty of defensive help behind him to attain perfection. In the fourth inning, Aaron Miller made a tough backhanded play deep in the hole at shortstop to retire Nick Natoli, a play Taylor would refer to as Derek Jeter-like after the game. In the fifth, leftfielder Alex Hill made a catch on a Brandon Padula fly ball to the gap in left-center field.
Then in the ninth, Chris Mazza dropped a Jimmy Roesinger foul pop with one out, but Roesinger then grounded out to Greg Fujii for the second out of the inning. Joe Westbrook lined out to right fielder Joey Rapp to complete the perfect game. Rapp appeared to lose the ball in the lights for a split-second before reaching both hands over his head to make the grab.
Taylor said his family was visiting from Indiana, including his parents, grandmother and sister. It was the last time they would see him pitch this year, he said.
The perfect game understandably overshadowed one of the top offensive outputs for the Sharks this season. The 13 runs tie the nine-inning season best with the 13-5 win over Columbia on July 12th.
The offensive action started in the fourth inning as it did the night before in Fayetteville. After Matt Milroy replaced Ryan Prickett (L, 4-3) on the mound with the bases loaded and no outs, Conor Szczerba hit into a double play to score Kenny Bryant making it 1-0. A Chris Mazza grounder turned into more runs after second baseman Casey Maloney overthrew first base, scoring Aaron Preston and Greg Fujii to make it 3-0.
Wilmington blew the game open in the fifth, scoring six more to make it 9-0. Kenny Bryant’s double to right scored Aaron Miller for the first run on the inning. A wild pitch by Andy Lowe scored Joey Rapp and then Szczerba’s single scored Fujii and Bryant to make it 7-0. Alex Hill then reached on a fielder’s choice where Matt Willis and Szczerba scored to make it 9-0 going into the sixth.
Szczerba then kicked off the scoring in the sixth when his fielder’s choice scored Bryant. Mazza then singled to right field, scoring Szczerba and Fujii to make it 12-0. Bryant’s single scored Miller in the seventh capped the scoring at 13-0.
Bryant was 4-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Szczerba was 1-5 with two runs and three RBIs, giving him six RBIs in his last two games.
The Sharks are back in action Friday, July 23 at Buck Hardee Field against the Morehead City Marlins on Cape Fear Diagnostics Autograph Night and Taco Bell Fireworks Night. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. with first pitch at 7:05.

GLSCL ANNOUNCES PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Posted by Andrew on 1:03 PM
From the Great Lake Summer Collegiate League
As the end of summer baseball is quickly approaching, the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s players are working harder than ever. For Hamilton Joes’ Brent Suter, diligence and performing under pressure has gotten him the title of Pitcher of the week, again.
Last week Suter was announced Pitcher of the Week for his 2-0 standings with 12 innings pitched, 12 strikeouts and 3 BBs. This week his 1-0 in a complete game with 6 strikeouts outshined his competition and brought him the recognition of Pitcher of the Week for a second time in a row. Suter’s statistics are impressive, but the fact that he can throw a fastball at 90 mph with his left-hand is what makes Suter more than just your average “Joe”.
Although Suter’s success is celebrated this week, he shares the spotlight with Player of the Week Dalton Henzman of the Lexington Hustlers. Henzman is an outfielder and has a .500 BA with 1 HR and 3 RBIs. Henzman is the first Lexington Hustler to make Player of the Week this season.
Dr. Kim Lance, commissioner of the GLSCL, gave both players congratulations, and said he is impressed with their statistics and progress this season.
“Both these players represent what it means to be in the Great Lakes League,” Lance said. “They’ve continued to work hard all season and now its really showing and paying off. That’s what they’re here for and I’m happy for both of them.”
