Fassold Tabbed WCL Player of the Week
Bellingham Bells starter Cody Fassold has been named the West Coast League player of the week, league officials announced Tuesday, after shutting out Moses Lake on Friday, June 25, en route to his second win of the season.
Fassold allowed just six hits and struck out seven in the complete game victory against the Pirates. It was his second win in as many outings for the Gaston, Ore., native. Fassold is no stranger to the West Coast League. In 2008 and 2009, he pitched for Wenatchee where he compiled a 6-1 record in two seasons with the AppleSox.
The Lewis-Clark State product is now 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA in three starts for Bellingham and leads the WCL with 30 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings on the hill.
Fassold is next scheduled to take the mound on Wednesday, June 30 as the Bells take on the Walla Walla Sweets as part of the Banner Bank Day Game beginning at 12:35 p.m. at Joe Martin Field.

2010 CPL Rawlings Players of the Week for Week Four
The Coastal Plain League announced Monday that Peninsula’s Chas Crane was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while Thomasville’s Ben Grisz was named the Rawlings Pitcher of the Week for week four of action (June 21-27).
A sophomore at Winthrop, Crane started all six games for the Pilots on the week. In those games, he batted .500 with 10 hits, including four doubles and two home runs. He tallied a league-high 12 RBIs with four runs scored and 20 total bases. Furthermore, Crane had a league-best 1.000 slugging percentage to go with a .577 on-base percentage with five walks and three stolen bases.
On the mound, Grisz, a sophomore at Duke, had one appearance for the HiToms but made it count. The 6-4, 220-pound right-hander pitched a complete game shutout of West Division first half champion Forest City on June 23. In nine innings of work, Grisz scattered two hits, walked two and struck out 10 to grab the win and finish with a perfect 0.00 ERA. Grisz also held opposing batters to a .069 average against him.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 800 alumni drafted and 36 alums make their Major League debut thus far. GLSCL Players Make 2010 Draft
A baseball player’s journey to the big leagues is one that involves discipline, dedication and practice. It’s these characteristics that former Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (GLSCL) players foster and develop during their summers with the league.
According to Dr. Kim Lance, GLSCL commissioner, it’s the time the potential all stars spend practicing on their passion that leads to the manifestation of their dreams.
“For many of our young players who join the Great Lakes League, this is the first time they get to really show off what they can do with a wooden bat,” he said. “It’s where they can work day in and day out for a few months to practice and excel at their sport. It’s really in their hands to make the best of the opportunity, and many of them do.”
Among those many dedicated players are 42 former Great Lake Leaguers who were drafted a few weeks ago. With 12 players going in the first 10 rounds, and former Lake Erie Monarchs player Kolbrin Vitek going to the Red Sox as a 20th overall draft pick, the GLSCL produces top--notch contenders.
Following Vitek was Perci Garner form the Stark County Terriers and Jarrett Parker from the Delaware Cows. Both were drafted in the second round, with Garner going to the Phillies and Parker to the Giants. In the fifth round Steven Pryor, former Cows player, went to the Mariners. Next, Gauntlett Eldemeyer, former Southern Ohio Copperhead, was signed in the sixth round to the Phillies. The Diamondbacks took Jeff Shields, former Lima Locos player, in the seventh round and Matt Suschak from the Settlers was picked in the seventh round to play for the Braves. Another former Settlers player, Tommy Shirley, went to the Astros in the ninth round.
In the 10th round four former GLSCL players were drafted. Tyler Burgoon from the Locos went to the Mariners; Jared Hoying from the Grand Lake Mariners and Settlers went to the Rangers; Tim Ferguson from the Cows went to the Royals, and Kevin Arico from the Cows went to the Reds. Former Cincinnati Steam player Ryan Strausborger went to the Rangers in the 16th round, and Brian Garman from the Locos went to the Brewers in the 17th round. David Richardson, former Hamilton Joe, was also drafted in the 17th to the Orioles. Former Cow player Tyler Burnett went to the Astros in the 17th round as well. Robert Maddox III, former All Americans player, went to the Reds in the 18th round.
In the 19th round, Steam player Adam Eaton went to the Diamondbacks and Jonathan Kountis from the Settlers went to the Mets. Matt Bischoff from the Locos went to the Mariners in the 20th round. In the 22nd round the former Monarchs player Zach Dygert was drafted to the Astros. Zach Hurley, former Steam player, went to the A’s in the 29th round.
In the 31st round, Kevin Kiermaier from the Copperheads went to the Rays and former Cows player David Goforth who went to the Indians. In the 33rd round The Tigers took former Monarchs player Brennan Smith. In the 34th round, Jerod Yakubic from the Settlers and the Copperheads went to the Angels and Tyler Oliver from the Lexington Hustlers went to the Nationals. In the 35th round, the Cows player Tyler Wilson went to the Reds, followed by former Hamilton Joes’ player Chuck Ghysels who went to the Reds in the 36th round. Rob Gariano from the Settlers went to the Padres in the 36th round. Cameron Hobson, former Copperhead, went to the Yankees in the 37th round. Former Joes’ player Noah Mull went to the Padres in the 38th round, and Steve Matre from the Steam went to the Dodgers in the 39th round. Kevin Cahill, former Locos player, went in the 41st round to the Nationals, along with Chris Rearick from the Locos who was drafted to the Rays.
In the 42nd round Locos player Aaron Fields went to the Indians and the Diamondbacks drafted former Copperheads’ player Chris Jarrett. Matt Tracy from the Cows went to the Marlins in the 43rd round. Steam player Robert Sabo went to the padres in the 44th round. The Yankees in the 44th round drafted another former Steam player, David Middendorf. Finally to go in the 46th round were two former GLSCL players. Michael Jefferson went to the Mets and A.J. Achter, former Monarchs player, was drafted to the Twins.
