From the Coastal Plain League
Shawn Armstrong struck out nine in four innings of work and the Morehead City Marlins scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Florence RedWolves, 4-3, at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Sunday night.
Armstrong, a redshirt-freshman right-hander out of East Carolina, arrived at Morehead City earlier in the day and joined the Marlins (5-0) at the start of batting practice. He then made his season debut in relief of starter Rob Kumbadovic in the sixth inning, striking out the first two batters he faced.
Armstrong (W, 1-0) would go on to throw the game’s final four innings and strike out nine Florence (3-2) batters – including Tyler Boyd to end the game – against just one walk. He retired seven batters in a row to end the game, allowing Morehead City to earn the one-run victory.
That decisive run came in the bottom of the eighth after Shawn Lovette led off the inning with a line-drive single to right off of Florence reliever Kit Carter (L, 0-1). Four batters later, Lovette stood on third base when Nolan Lancaster chopped a slow roller up the third base line. By the time Carter reached the ball, Lancaster reached safely and Lovette crossed home.
Earlier, Morehead City opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Tripp Lancaster executed a safety squeeze, scoring Trey Such from first base to put the Marlins up 1-0. After Florence tied the score in the top of the third, Such answered with a run-scoring single that sent Brian Inghram home as the Marlins’ second run.
Florence answered with another run in the top of the sixth, but Morehead City regained the lead in the bottom of that frame thanks to Justyn Carter’s 2-out RBI double to left that scored Matt Ciraco. Florence touched Armstrong for an unearned run in the top of the seventh to make the game 3-3, leading to Nolan Lancaster’s game-winning hit in the eighth.
Ciraco’s sixth-inning stolen base improved the Marlins’ team total to 22-for-22 on the basepaths to this point in the season. With the win, Morehead City now holds a two-game lead over Florence in the South Division standings. The Marlins have their first day off of the season tomorrow before traveling to Edenton to take on the Steamers on Tuesday night.
The Morehead City Marlins are the newest member of the Coastal Plain League. The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.

Hitter of the Night in the CPL from May 29th
Posted by Andrew on 4:51 PM
While there were several great offensive performances on the 29th, there wasn't that "special" one that makes my job real easy. With that being said, my Hitter of the Night in the Coastal Plain League from the 29th of May is Michael Zeblo from the Wilson Tobs by way of Davidson University. Zeblo is a sophomore infielder from Raleigh, NC. In a big win over the Generals, Michael went 3 for 5, with a double, 2 runs scored and an rbi. As of the 31st, Michael is now batting .429 for the Tobs.

It isn’t The Show. But for the next two months, Ryan Saunders and Jon Winick are going to feel like pro baseball players – albeit at the minor league level.
The two former B.C. Premier Baseball League players leave this weekend to join their respective teams in the Alberta-based Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) before both move on to join the Bellhaven Blazers university team in Jackson, Mississippi in the fall. Read the rest here.

Pitcher of the Night in the CPL From May 29th
Posted by Andrew on 1:48 PM
I'm sounding like a broken record, but Coastal Plain Leagues games that were played on the 29th of May brought several more outstanding pitching efforts. What I find really neat is that several of these outings were pitched by players that are temporary players. This just goes to show you just how great the competition is in the Coastal Plain League.
Without further delay, my Pitcher of the Night in the CPL from May 29th is Sam Pepper from the Gastonia Grizzlies by way of Francis Marion University. Sam, a 6-2/200 pound rhp from Tabernacle, NJ picked up his first win of the season by throwing 7.1 innings of 2-hit shutout baseball against the Forest City Owls. He walked just 3 batters and he fanned 5 as well on the night.

"Millers Drop Home Opener"

From the Western Major Baseball League
MOOSE JAW, SK - Speed and aggression on the basepaths will likely end up winning the Moose Jaw Miller Express more games than not in 2010.
Opening the season Sunday night at a chilly Ross Wells Park, that script was flipped.
Two Miller Express potential base stealers were thrown out in the final two innings, Eric Nutzhorn struck out with two men on base in the 9th, and the Weyburn Beavers escaped with a 5-4 win in the Western Major Baseball League opener for both teams.
After walking to lead-off the 9th inning, Moose Jaw's Matt Balogh was thrown out stealing second base, in a play that should never have got that far.
"There was a miscommunication between myself and the runner," said Millers head coach Michael Hunt. "I tried to take the sign off, but he didn't catch it."
Weyburn jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the 6th inning, scoring three unearned on two Moose Jaw errors. In the bottom half, Nutzhorn scored Moose Jaw's second run on a Brandon Loveridge fielders choice.
The team's traded runs in the 7th, with Christian Wise connecting for a solo homerun in the bottom half.
Trailing 5-3 in the 8th inning, Moose Jaw managed to cut the lead in half when Scott Hornstra plated on a wild pitch, but that was as close as they would come.
Moose Jaw's next action is Wednesday, June 2nd. The Regina Red Sox visit Ross Wells Park for a 7:05 start.

Better late than never I say, so my Pitcher of the Night in the Coastal Plain League from May 28th is Jeff Brown from the Wilson Tobs by way of Kennesaw State University. Brown, a junior from Brunswick, GA didn't factor into the decision in what turned out to be a 12-inning pitcher's duel. Nevertheless, he was simply outstanding. He didn't allow a run on four hits in his 8-innings of work. He had pinpoint control (0 walks allowed) and he fanned 9 batters on the night.

McAllister Goes the Distance in Marlins’ 5-3 win
Posted by Andrew on 3:40 PM
From the Coastal Plain League
Brad McAllister threw the first complete game in team history Thursday night, leading the Morehead City Marlins to a 5-3 win over the Wilmington Sharks at Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium.
A sophomore right-hander out of Barry University, McAllister (W, 1-0) began his first start in a Morehead City (2-0) uniform by retiring the first nine batters he faced. The Sharks (0-2) did break through in the bottom of the fifth, as Kenny Bryant’s RBI single to center capped a three-run inning that gave Wilmington a 3-2 lead.
But after that rocky frame, McAllister shut down the Wilmington lineup. He worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh and stranded a runner on second in the next inning. McAllister’s performance allowed the Marlins to come from behind for the second straight night.
With his team down by a run in the top of the seventh, Shawn Lovette scored on a Ben Scheffer groundout to tie the game at three. Nolan Lancaster followed that with a line-drive single off the glove of Wilmington shortstop Chris Mazza, allowing Brian Inghram to cross home and give Morehead City a 4-3 lead.
The Marlins added insurance in the top of the ninth, as Patrick Mincey’s throwing error allowed Justyn Carter to score from first and put the Marlins up by two runs.
Morehead City opened the scoring for the second consecutive night, touching up Wilmington starter Ryan Leach for a pair of runs in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Nolan Lancaster singled through the left side, scoring Inghram to give Morehead City the game’s first run.
Three batters later, Mazza misplayed a grounder off the bat of Tripp Lancaster. That allowed Preston Shuey to score from third and give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
The Marlins play their first-ever game at brand-new Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Friday night; hosting the Fayetteville SwampDogs at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Ben White is scheduled to get the start for Morehead City.

Pitcher of the Night in the Coastal Plain League
Posted by Andrew on 9:45 AM
The decision on my Pitcher of the Night in the CPL for last night's games was extremely difficult. I'm sure that I will get a lot of complaints.........but that's ok. Last night, the CPL had a 7-inning no-hitter, a complete-game thrown, and several high strikeout games. But alas, I have to narrow my pick down to one player, and so, my Pitcher of the Night is Kramer Sneed from the Wilson Tobs by way of Barton College. He picked up the win against his former team, the Outer Banks Daredevils last night, by throwing 8 quality innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just 2 hits and 1 walk, while fanning 10 batters.

Sanford River Rats Season Preview
Posted by Andrew on 7:41 AM
From the Florida Collegiate Summer League
The Sanford River Rats ended the 2009 season on a disappointing note, losing to the Leesburg Lightning just one round short of advancing to Tropicana Field for the league championship. Ending a season with a sour taste in your mouth can often lead to changes in a team’s organization. And that’s exactly what happened with the River Rats.
The FCSL’s headline name, Davey Johnson, is now the head coach of the Sanford River Rats. Johnson, 67, has been in four World Series both as a player and a manager. Johnson has seen just about everything when it comes to baseball, and his understanding of the game will tremendously help his River Rat players and also his assistant coach, Kevin Davidson.
“The wealth of knowledge from a guy like him who has 14 years managerial experience in the big leagues and 15 as a player, he’s a baseball legend.” said Davidson. “Anytime you sit next to him it really helps your baseball knowledge to try and help the kids get to the next level.”
Johnson isn’t coming into the town of Sanford alone. He’s brought 2009 FCSL All-Star Austin Chubb to play behind the plate. Chubb’s .338 batting average in 2009 was second in the FCSL. The State College of Florida catcher boasted an even better .347 average during his 2010 season and should be among the short list of names considered for the MVP award.
Last season the Sanford River Rats were extremely consistent, not losing more than two games in a row. Sanford has kept on to that consistency, returning All-Stars Drew Morgan (Florida Southern) and Antonio Clark (Valdosta State).
Drew Morgan will be manning the shortstop position for the River Rats. His .426 on base percentage was third in the FCSL. The 5’8 160 lb. junior from Florida Southern also has a rock-solid glove.
Antonio Clark is returning for his third season with the River Rats. The seasoned veteran is one of the fastest River Rats on the base paths and also adds a lefty bat to the lineup. Clark scored 47 runs and stole 14 bases in his junior season with Valdosta State.
Add another 2009 All-Star to this River Rat squad in utility man Tyler Benzel. Benzel’s 47 hits in 2009 for Clermont were tops in the FCSL. The junior had 43 RBI’s to help lead Florida Southern to a 41-16 record.
New to the pitching staff is freshman Josh Lucas. The 6’7 righty was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 39th round of the 2009 MLB draft. In 69.2 innings, Lucas struck out 57 batters, good for third on the State College of Florida team.
Coming to the River Rats from the competitive SEC conference is Trey Pilkington. The freshman opted to go Alabama for a season rather than the minor league system of the New York Mets, who selected him in the 46th round in 2009. Pilkington will be joined by Crimson Tide teammates Troy Sutherland, a pitcher and infielder Danny Collins.
Jacob Knott was talented enough to lock down the closer role for Seminole College as a freshman. The 6’4 right hander notched 10 saves to go along with an impressive 42 strikeouts. He will need to be a major asset out of the River Rat bullpen.
Kevin Davidson was not shy about the expectations of his ballclub;
“Overall we have a ton of depth and were going to be competitive,” said Davidson. “I wouldn’t be doing my team justice if I didn’t say I think we have a chance to win the whole thing.”

Dawgs in Conference Tournaments, Day 2
Posted by Andrew on 7:34 AM
From the Okotoks Dawgs
Conference tournaments throughout college baseball continued on Thursday, with an Okotoks Dawg stealing the show in one of them.
Southland Conference: The Southland Conference tournament resumed on Thursday morning with Dawgs outfielder Jeff Harkensee leading the way for Southeastern Louisiana University as they took on Northwestern State. #3 seed SE Louisiana was in need of a victory on Thursday after being upset on Wednesday by #6 McNeese State.
No such problems today as they took a 10-4 decision over #2 Northwestern State, with Dawgs outfielder Jeff Harkensee playing a central role. In the top of the first inning, with two runners on and nobody out, Harkensee blasted the first pitch of his at-bat out to right field to spot his team an early 3-0 lead. Jeff was at it again in the top of the eighth, shooting a pitch down the right field line, cashing in another run to make it 8-4 for the Lions. On the day, the future Dawg was 2 for 4 with a homerun, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI. He also walked once.
SE Louisiana will now get a rematch with McNeese State on Friday morning.
Conference USA: #2 seed Southern Mississipi, with Dawgs Mark Ellis and Marc Bourgeois, fresh off their 8-2 win in game 1 over #3 Memphis, took on #5 East Carolina on Thursday. Unfortunately it did not go so well this time, as they fell behind early and never recovered, dropping game 2 by a count of 8-1; Mark Ellis was 1 for 4. The Golden Eagles will take on Houston on Friday night.
MAAC: Canisius College, with Dawgs infielder Drew Pettit, after a game 1 win over Manhattan, dropped game 2 of the MAAC Tournament to #3 Rider University. Pettit was 1 for 4 in the 7-5 loss. Canisius now plays a rematch with Manhattan on Friday.
The Dawgs wish nothing but the best to all of the Dawgs currently representing their schools in tournament play, and when their springs do eventually come to an end, we look forward to putting them in Dawgs uniforms for the summer.
The Dawgs open up their 2010 season on June 4th in Moose Jaw, which will be the first of a four game road trip to start the season. Your first chance to welcome the 3-time defending champs home, will be Opening Day at Seaman Stadium, Tuesday, June 8th, at 7:05. Opening Weekend at Seaman Stadium follows that Friday through Sunday, June 11 through 13.

Dawgs in conference play
Posted by Andrew on 4:45 PM
From the Okotoks Dawgs
Several members of the 2010 Dawgs are currently battling in their respective conference tournaments with their school teams. Here is a quick run down on all the Dawgs in conference tournaments.
NCAA Division 1:
Pac 10 Conference: While the regular season in the Pac-10 has a couple more games left, Washington State University has put themselves in a good position. With a game against Portland, and a 3 game set against UCLA remaining, the Cougars sit at 32-18 overall and 14-10 in conference play, good enough for 3rd in the Pac-10. They are currently ranked #20 in NCAA Div. 1 baseball.
Dawgs infielder Cody Bartlett has been a key piece of the WSU puzzle all season. Starting 48 games, Bartlett is hitting .333, which is 2nd best on the Cougars; he has contributed 5 homeruns and 29 RBI. He has been rock solid in the middle infield, committing just 7 errors for a .969 fielding percentage. Dawgs’ pitcher Brett DeRooy has also seen some action for WSU this spring.
Conference USA: The C-USA tournament got underway Wednesday morning. Southern Mississippi University, with 2010 Dawgs Mark Ellis and Marc Bourgeois, is the #2 seed in the C-USA tournament, as they finished their regular season with a 33-21 overall record, and a 14-10 record in conference play.
On Wednesday morning, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles opened the C-USA tournament with a decisive 8-2 win over #3 seed Memphis, with Mark Ellis batting fifth in the order and playing first base. The Golden Eagles play game 2 of the tournament Thursday morning when they take on #5 seed East Carolina.
Southland Conference: The Southland Conference tournament started on Wednesday morning with Dawgs outfielder Jeff Harkensee and his Southeastern Louisiana teammates, taking on McNeese State. SE Louisiana enters the tournament as the #3 seed with a 39-18 overall record, and a 21-12 record in conference, while their game 1 opponents, McNeese State, enter as the #7 seed.
Unfortunately for Harkensee and the SE Lousiana Lions, McNeese was able to pull the upset, scoring a run in the eighth inning and 2 in the ninth, to take the 8-7 win. The Lions face a stiff test on Thursday in game 2, as they face #2 seed Northwestern State.
MAAC: Canisius College, with Dawgs infielder Drew Pettit, enjoyed a tremendous regular season with a 38-19 overall record, and a 19-5 record in conference play, earning themselves the #1 seed in the MAAC tournament, which got underway on Wednesday, as the Griffons took on #4 seed Manhattan.
With Pettit going 1-3 with a walk, the Griffons were able to hang on to a 7-5 win over Manhattan despite 3 late runs. Canisius will now face the winner of the winner of Wednesday night’s #2 Marist vs. #3 Rider game, in their game 2 matchup tommorow.
The Dawgs wish nothing but the best to all of the Dawgs currently representing their schools in tournament play, and when their springs do eventually come to an end, we look forward to putting them in Dawgs uniforms for the summer.

AppleSox Fill Out 2010 Roster
Posted by Andrew on 3:25 PM
From the Wenatchee AppleSox
(Wenatchee, WA) - The AppleSox are putting the final pieces together on the 2010 roster. The defending West Coast League Champions have added a mix of returning players and newcomers from around the Northwest.
The team will be welcoming back two players who have previously worn an AppleSox uniform, infielder Trent Bridges from Lewis-Clark State College and catcher Maxx Garrett from Columbia Basin College. Three newcomers are also joining the team, University of Washington first-baseman Eric Peterson, University of Portland left-handed pitcher Scotty Burris, and Tacoma Community College right-handed pitcher Sean Santschi.
Both Garrett and Bridges were temporary players for the AppleSox last season. They started the season with the team while a few full-time players finished up school and both made a great impression on AppleSox head coach Ed Knaggs in their limited action.
Garrett, from Kennewick, WA, is finishing up his sophomore year at Columbia Basin College and is transferring to Gonzaga next season. The catcher is hitting .375 with 37 RBIs this season. He appeared in seven games for the AppleSox last season and hit .348 with four RBIs.
“He was a savior for us the first week of last season,” said Knaggs. “He was fun to have on the team and we are glad to have him back.”
Bridges is finishing up his sophomore year at Lewis-Clark State College. The Coeur d’Alene, ID product is hitting .356 for the powerhouse program. The Warriors set the NAIA regular season winning percentage mark this year after compiling a 47-3 record. Last summer as temporary player he appeared and started in three games for the AppleSox, with four hits in nine at bats.
“He played as if he should be a full-time player in this league last season. He is a hard-nosed guy and a great teammate,” said Knaggs.
Peterson, from Renton, WA, is the lone Husky joining the AppleSox this summer. The freshman has appeared in 21 games this season and is hitting .212. He had a stellar high school career where he was named 3A state co-player of the year and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 28th round of the 2009 MLB draft.
“He is a big kid who the University of Washington coaches think is their first baseman of the future,” said Knaggs.
Burris is from Portland, OR, and 1-1 for the University of Portland this season with a 5.89 ERA. The junior has made seven starts in 13 appearances for the Pilots.
“Coach Hippi recruited him out of high school and he really liked his arm,” said Knaggs. “He is a nice kid and we are excited to have him.”
Santschi, a sophomore who is transferring from Tacoma Community College to Gonzaga, will come out of the bullpen for the AppleSox. The Vancouver, WA, native has a 0.56 ERA and 11 saves this season, which is tied for most in the NWAACC.
Notes: Two high school seniors bound for Wenatchee this summer that have committed to UCLA, pitchers Adam Plutko and Zack Weiss, were ranked by Baseball America in their top 200 prospect for the upcoming MLB draft…. Plutko was ranked #131 and Weiss was right behind him at #132… Sean Wilson, Brock Slavin, and Tyler Olson from Gonzaga are no longer on the AppleSox roster this summer…. The Bulldogs will instead send freshman infielder Clayton Eslick, who has appeared in all 53 of the Zags games and is hitting .277.

Kaleb Fleck will be back in Waynesboro to pitch for the Generals in 2010.
The signing of Fleck, who pitched in Waynesboro in 2008 and then last summer played in the Cape Cod League, was one of a series of player-personnel moves announced by the team on Tuesday.
The Generals added another pitcher, Mars Hill righthander Greg Smith, and announced that two players who had signed contracts with the team to play in 2010, Austin Peay pitcher Lucas Anderson and Towson pitcher Spencer Patton, will not be playing this summer.
Fleck, a 6-2, 195-pound junior at Pitt-Johnstown, had a 1-2 record with two saves and a 1.80 ERA out of the Generals bullpen in 2008. His gaudy numbers included 31 strikeouts and just three bases on balls in 25 innings pitched.

Coastal Plain League, PBUC Announce Contract Extension

From the Coastal Plain League
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League announced today that it has renewed its working agreement with the Professional Baseball Umpire Corp (PBUC), a Minor League Baseball wholly owned subsidiary, through the 2014 season.
“PBUC is excited to have the opportunity to continue our successful relationship with the Coastal Plain League,” said PBUC Executive Director Justin Klemm. “For the past three years we have experienced many benefits from our agreement. We have hired a higher quality umpire who is better prepared for the rigors of a professional baseball umpiring career. We look forward to working with the CPL staff to further the development of those umpires who take advantage of the experience that the Coastal Plain League and PBUC offer.”
The CPL and PBUC partnered up prior to the 2008 Coastal Plain League season with PBUC providing its reserve umpires to the CPL. The agreement allows reserve list umpires to continue to develop their skills in a competitive environment, while waiting for the call from PBUC to work Minor League Baseball games.
Since 2008, 48 PBUC reserve umpires have gotten their start in the Coastal Plain League, with an impressive 36 of them moving on since to work games in Minor League Baseball.
“We are very excited to reach an extension agreement between the Coastal Plain League and the PBUC,” said CPL President and Commissioner Pete Bock. “We have enjoyed working with Justin (Klemm) and his staff, as well as the reserve umpires during the first couple of years of our agreement. From talking with the umpires and the PBUC front office, it is apparent that our relationship is beneficial to both parties, and one we are excited to be continuing for several years to come.”
PBUC is responsible for the training, evaluation and recommendation for promotion, retention or release of all umpires in the Minor League Baseball system throughout the United States and Canada.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 700 alumni drafted and 36 alums make their Major League debut thus far. For more information on the Coastal Plain League, please visit the league Web site at http://www.coastalplain.com.

Hitter of the Night in the Coastal Plain League
Posted by Andrew on 8:28 AM
One of the most difficult things about selecting a Hitter of the Night is that I know I will be leaving out a ton of great performances. It was a tough decision, but my Hitter of the Night in the Coastal Plain League for games played yesterday, the 26th of May is Keith Morrisroe from the Wilson Tobs by way of Concord University. In a close game with the Steamers, Keith hit what turned out to the be the game-winning single in the top of the 9th to lift the Tobs to a 3-2 victory. He finished the night by going 4 for 5, with 2 rbi's.

Pitcher of the Night in the Coastal Plain League
Posted by Andrew on 8:05 AM
Last night was opening night for the Coastal Plain League. We were treated to close games, outstanding pitching efforts, timely hitting and even extra-inning games. Let's start this off with the Pitcher of the Night in the Coastal Plain League for games played on the 26th of May.
Nathan Furr from the Asheboro Copperheads by way of Catawba College is the Pitcher of the Night. The Junior pitcher for Albemarle, NC picked up the win by throwing 6 solid shutout innings last night. He allowed just 4 hits, walked 2 batters and struck out 6 in the Copperheads win over the Wilmington Sharks.
NOTE FROM May 27th at 2:45 PM: When I went over the box scores early this morning, the Mustangs one wasn't listed. It looks as if Jonathan Cornelius (Florida Tech) of the Martinsville Mustangs deserves to be the Pitcher of the Night. He allowed 1 hit in 7 shutout innings, while striking out 11. Rather than take Nathan off the list, I will just add Jonathan to my master list of Pitcher's of the Night.

WMBL Camps Open Up
Posted by Andrew on 4:48 PM
From the Western Major Baseball League
Opening Weekend for the 2010 WMBL season is just days away. That means that many teams have already, or will soon, assemble for pre-season practices and training camp.
Predictably, when you bring a group of over 20 individuals together for the first time, familiarity can be somewhat of an issue off the start. With each WMBL team bringing in players from across North America, it is a high priority at this point in the year for the players to gain familiarity with their teammates, and for the coaches to learn about their players.
“The best we can hope for in the few days is we have is to develop as much team chemistry as we can.” says Michael Hunt, head coach of the Moose Jaw Millers.
He adds though, that much of his group has something in common,
“We have a strong mid-west flavor on our team. We also have several players from Colby College, and the Jayhawk Conference, so it shouldn’t take long to come together.”
That is one common technique used by many teams - signing players in pairs from each school, or sometimes several from a school to ensure players have some comfort zone entering the season.
Training Camp in the WMBL does not run for a long period of time like Major League spring training, with some WMBL teams having a week of pre season practice, and some having as little as 2 days. Coaches do not have an excess of time to get their players functioning as one cohesive unit, meaning that both coach and player have to ‘learn on the fly’.
This short but valuable bonding time is time for the players to get to know their new teammates and learn how to play with them. But as Regina head coach Rob Cherepuschak points out, this is an important time for other reasons,
“It’s important for the guys to become familiar with their new surroundings; the new community, host families, and ballpark.”
The coaches need to keep a close eye on their new personnel in these early stages, to learn how it is all going to fit together. Coaches obviously have a good idea of what their players bring to the table, as there is a reason that they recruited each player on the roster. However, there is nothing like seeing it all on one field with your own eyes.
Swift Current head coach Joe Carnahan offers his thoughts.
“With the early practices we want to figure out guys’ strengths and weaknesses. We will put them in a couple different situations early on to see how they respond, and determine which roll best suits their talents.”
With players coming in from different programs where they had assumed various rolls, some may be comfortable with the situation they were in while with their school team. Okotoks assistant coach Brett Thomas says sometimes this is something you don’t want to mess with.
“A lot of what we do is keep them doing what they’ve been doing all spring. We want to keep both our hitters and our pitchers right where they were at.”
Some players for one reason or another, had less at bats, or threw fewer innings through the course of the spring. This is something Thomas admits they need to address early on,
“Some guys have not played as much this spring. We will get them facing live hitters and pitchers right away to bring them up to speed.”
As the coaches are finding out what they can get out of each player, the players are learning from the coaches, the team’s style and systems. Medicine Hat head coach Greg Morrison comments,
“Before Opening Day we are getting our team tactics addressed, for example, bunt defence as well as first and third defence.”
Some coaches go about it a different way. Some coaches, like Terry Smith in Weyburn, say that they learn their players and how each one of their skill sets mesh together, and develop an on-field style based more on player attributes than coach style.
“(Assistant coach Justin) Wichert and I know a lot about our players already through recruiting. I don’t worry as much about how I utilize it, I look more at how I can help the team and our players develop.”
As this feeling-out period is progressing, players are presented with expectations and “ground rules” of sorts, to show them the ropes for the coming season. As much as the on-field learning means, the off-field learning can mean just as much. A WMBL player is not merely a baseball player, but a valued member of and contributor to their respective organization, as well as a highly regarded roll model in their community.
Cherepuschak does a good job of summing it up.
“We like to create an environment where the players feel comfortable, but also understand the importance of accountability on and off the field,” said the Red Sox bench boss.
“On the field, each player needs to understand he plays an important roll in our success. Off the field, our players will understand the importance of being solid members of our community; the people of Regina do a wonderful job supporting our club and it is our responsibility to serve as good roll models for any young boy or girl in our community.”
In Medicine Hat, Greg Morrison drives home one concept to his players.
“We treat the players with respect; they treat others with respect, respect the game, respect yourself, respect the umpires, respect your host family, respect the fans, respect the city.”
The first few days of the season before a team ever throws a meaningful pitch or takes a real at-bat, can be a critical time in the formation of a true “team”.
That time is upon us, with WMBL training camps getting underway this week, and Opening Weekend starting this Friday in Edmonton. As you return to your local ballpark to support your favorite WMBL team for the first time after a long winter, you can appreciate how much the players and coaches have on their plates as the season gets off the ground.

1st Annual Jerry Robertson Classic
Posted by Andrew on 2:00 PM
From the Topeka Golden Giants
Topeka, KS - The Topeka Golden Giants are proud to announce a special
exhibition game to be held on Wednesday June 2nd at 7:10 pm at Lake Shawnee. This event will be the first annual Jerry Robertson Classic, as the Topeka
Golden Giants will take on the Washburn University All-Star Alumni team.
Before the game at 6 PM there will be a ceremony to dedicate the big diamond
at Lake Shawnee Baseball Complex, Jerry Robertson Field. The Shawnee County
Parks and Rec Foundation is honoring Jerry and family with the naming with
plans to fund a $250,000 endowment to help maintain the field as a first
class baseball facility for high school and college age players.
Robertson, a Washburn Alum, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the
27th round of the 1965 amateur draft. He went on to spend 2 season in the
Majors with the Montreal Expos and Detroit Tigers.
For the seven years that he played professional baseball, Jerry worked for
the Topeka YMCA in the winter months. This connection made it an easy
decision for Jerry to return to Topeka and accept the position of Assistant
Executive Director of the YMCA and in 1972, Jerry was named Executive
Director. Immediately after taking this position Jerry commenced a capital
campaign to build the North Topeka YMCA. Jerry was Director of the YMCA
until 1982 when he was named the Director of Athletics at Washburn
University shortly after being inducted into the Washburn University
Athletic Hall of Fame.
Jerry implemented the University President's decision to transition Washburn
athletics from the NAIA to the MIAA of the NCAA. In August, 1989, Jerry
returned to the Topeka YMCA to serve as Executive Director. Jerry also
served as President of Downtown Topeka, Inc. until his death on March 24,
1996.
Jerry made major contributions to the city through his work with the YMCA,
Downtown Topeka, Topeka Rotary Club and building projects at Washburn
University including Lee Arena, Falley Field, and Petro Center. Jerry was
involved with his children in Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, T-Ball, baseball at
Suburban League and SCABA.
The Golden Giants are honored to take part in the Jerry Robertson Classic
and look forward on making this an annual event to kick off the summer
collegiate baseball season.
A suggested donation of $5 will be welcome at the gate. First pitch is
scheduled for 7:05 pm. Proceeds will be shared equally with the Jerry
Robertson endowment fund to preserve the facility for future generations and
the Golden Giants Baseball Club.

Bellingham Bells Sign Three As Season Draws Near
Posted by Andrew on 1:31 PM
From the Bellingham Bells
Bellingham, Wash. – The Bellingham Bells are close to finishing off their 2010 roster with opening night just 10 days away. On Tuesday (May 25), the Bells announced the additions of pitcher Cordell Greene, infielder Cody Regis, and outfielder/pitcher Mark Purser.
Greene is wrapping up his sophomore year at Des Moines Area Community College, although it is his first year with the team. Before arriving in Iowa, the Minnesota native was instrumental to the success of the Indiana State University Sycamores in 2009, when he posted a 3-2 record in 36 innings—the most of any pitcher in the ISU bullpen. This year, with DMACC, Greene has put together a 3-2 record with a 5.31 ERA in 39 innings with 50 strikeouts.
“Cordell is one of the best small college pitchers in the country, and we’re thrilled to have him aboard for this season. He’s familiar with the area having grown up in the Seattle area and is looking to sign on with a regional NCAA Division I baseball program,” said Bells general manager Justin Stottlemyre.
Regis is in the midst of his freshman campaign at UCLA. The 19 years old stepped in as the starting third-baseman for the Bruins and has been instrumental to his team’s success with UCLA currently ranked No. 7 in the country in the most recent USA Today poll. Regis is hitting .295 from the right side and has started 38 of UCLA’s 52 games this season.
“We pride ourselves on bringing in a mix of experienced and new college players,” said Stottlemyre, “and Cody is one of the rare underclassmen that have really excelled in the Pac-10. He’s going to see a lot of time on the left side of the infield for us this summer.”
Purser, who returns for his second season with the Bells, will be one of Bellingham’s most useful and versatile players this summer. In his first season at Oklahoma City University, he split time in the outfield and on the mound. Entering the NAIA World Series, Purser has amassed a.402 batting average with 51 runs batted in and 10 home runs. As a pitcher, the Spokane, Wash., native showed great prowess as a reliever, going 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA.
“We’re going to be at a great advantage having Mark on the club again this year,” said Stottlemyre. “He’s grown tremendously as a player of the last nine months and the chance to have such a versatile talent as Mark on the team again this year is going to be a great benefit for our club and coaching staff.”
The Bells open their 2010 campaign June 12, 2010, at Joe Martin Field against the Kelowna Falcons at 6:35 p.m. Fans will be treated to an Opening Night fireworks following the action thanks to Silver Reef Casino. The game will be broadcast live on local radio at AM 930 KBAI and online at www.bellinghambells.com. Group and season tickets are still available; for tickets, you can reach the Bells Ticket Office 527-1035.
