Top Performers From 2010--Colby Holmes

My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Colby Holmes of the Florence RedWolves. Colby is a 5-11/200 pound rhp from the University of South Carolina. He hails from Conway, SC and he attended Conway High School. He was rated as the 7th best prospect in the state by Perfect Game. The Atlanta Braves selected him in the 47th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. It looks like his decision to attend South Carolina paid off, as he was a midweek start for the Gamecocks and he picked up a NCAA Championship ring with South Carolina.

Colby spent this past summer pitching for the Florence RedWolves of the Coastal Plain League. While his summer numbers might not have placed him among the CPL leaders, all he did was become the Wolves staff ace  and solidified him as being a pitcher to keep an eye out for.

Colby went just 3-3, but had a remarkable 1.18 era in 45.2 innings pitched. He allowed just 27 hits and held opponents to a .174 batting average. He appeared in 8 games, started 6 of those games, and he completed 1 of them. He also had a very nice bb/k ratio of 22/40 this summer.

For his performance this summer, Perfect Game ranked Colby as the 37th best prospect in the league. The following is from the PG scouting report on him:
"Midweek starter as FR for CWS champs, became staff ace this summer, FB 88-90 mph, throws CH, good breaking ball."

Here are his stats from the 2010 summer season.

  • 3-3
  • 1.18 era (2nd in league)
  • 45.2 inp
  • 22 walks
  • 40 strikeouts
  • .174 oba
  • 27 hits allowed
  • 8 app
  • 6 starts
  • 1 cg
  • 1 sv
