SwampDogs Swing Their Way To CPL South First Half Champs

From Summer Ball News Source
The SwampDogs could not find a better time to put their most impressive offensive and clutch performance of the season together than Monday night on the road.

A daunting task faced them; as the SwampDogs needed a road win against their division rival Wilson Tobs who despite posting a 3-2 record against them so far this season, had gone 11-2 at home.

But the collective leadership and experience of the Fayetteville roster would not let them down.

After falling behind 1-3 early in the ball game, the SwampDogs would rebound to score 10 unanswered runs to beat the Tobs (17-11) 11 to 3 at Fleming Stadium. The victory gives the SwampDogs a 16-10 record to end the first half of the season and be crowned CPL South Champions.

SwampDogs infielder Taylor Norfleet (Francis Marion) was playing in just his second start for the SwampDogs. He was brought in to replace the recently departed Casey McGrew, who was invited to try out for the Team USA Collegiate Squad and made the final roster a week later. After tonight’s game, Norfleet, in just eight at-bats is hitting .375 with 1 HR, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Tobs got on the board quickly with two outs in the bottom of the 1st. Zach Johnson hit into a routine groundout to second baseman Jared Humphreys but Humphreys threw it away allowing Bobby Leeper to score from second to make it a 1-0 Tobs lead.

The SwampDogs answered right back in the top of the 2nd when with one out, Norfleet crushed a Jeff Brown fastball deep over the double-tier fencing in right field to tie things up at 1 apiece.

Then in the bottom of the 3rd, Wilson put two more on the board. Justin Vasquez smoked an RBI triple to right-center field that scored Leeper all the way from first base. Immediately afterwards, Zach Johnson singled through the gap between third and short to score Vasquez and give the Tobs a 3-1 lead after three.

The SwampDogs would get another run in the 5th when Brendan Rowland chopped his second single of the game to left field to bring in Wet Delatte from third to cut the Tobs lead to 3-2.

After Jeff Brown (ND) finished after five innings for Wilson, the SwampDogs would tie things up against the Tobs bullpen in familiar fashion, by taking advantage of opponent’s mistakes. Eric Grabe reached base on a fielding error by his counterpart third baseman Zach Johnson. Matt Kole sacrificed Grabe over to second and Taylor Norfleet would strike out. Then with two outs in the inning, Jesse Lancaster, another former Wilson Tob singled to left to put Grabe on third. Wet Delatte then followed with a double down the right field line to bring Grabe home and tie the game up at 3.

The key inning came in the top of the 7th for the SwampDogs. After Michael Niemann struck out looking to begin the frame, the Dogs would get back-to-back-to-back singles by Rowland, Matt Skirving, and Grabe with one out. Matt Kole would line out to shallow left for the second out, but Norfleet would follow with a 3-RBI double to left off Brennan Dobbins (1-1) that brought all three Dogs home to make it 6-3.

Matt Skirving would put this game out of reach in the 8th inning with a grand slam home run off Jerris Springfield that gave Fayetteville a 10-3 lead. The homer was Skirving’s third of the season and gave him 13 RBI to close out the first half.

SwampDogs starter Michael Cotter (ND) pitched much better than the stats would indicate. The 6’6” right-hander went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned), five hits while striking out four and only walking one. Cotter however, picked up his teammates multiple times throughout the ball game and kept his team in the game; despite dealing with two errors and a grounder that hit field umpire Jeff Andrews which would ricochet out of the reach of Humphreys at second.

Ben Graham (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the SwampDogs, going two innings without allowing a run or hit.

The Dogs in celebration doused their Head Coach Darrell Handelsman with the Gatorade cooler during the postgame meeting.

The SwampDogs will head down to South Carolina Tuesday night to take on the Florence RedWolves. First pitch is at 7:05PM.

News and Notes:

The SwampDogs Brendan Rowland closed out his first half with a four hit performance, to increase his average to .353.

Eric Grabe came into tonight’s game hitting .500 in 22 AB with 4 RBI in the last calendar week.

The SwampDogs bullpen closed out the Tobs with 4.2 shutout innings to allow Fayetteville the opportunity to come back from two down.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 13th season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Perfect Game/Summer Ball Top 25

I have been asked by the fine folks at Perfect Game to help them put together their weekly Top 25 Summer League team lists. This is an honor for me and I hope that you will enjoy these weekly lists, and hopefully it will spark a little debate over the rankings. When I started to rank these teams, I had no idea just how difficult it would be. I know that some very deserving teams were left off, but I only had room enough for 25 teams.

Chatham Angles To No. 1 Spot

Compiled by Allan Simpson (PG Crosschecker) / Andrew Hartwell (College Summer Ball)

Even with a roster that included 2009 first-rounder Grant Green, two sandwich picks, three third-rounders and a fourth-round selection in this year’s draft (not to mention a number of potential early-round picks in the 2010 draft), the Chatham A’s finished near the bottom of the Cape Cod League standings in 2008.

But this year, as the newly-named Anglers, Chatham not only has a fresh new look, but a fresh start and has surged to the top of the Cape standings in the early going. In addition, the Anglers have retained their advantage as the No. 1 team in the Perfect Game/College Summer Ball weekly summer-league top 25 rankings for the second straight week.

Though all Cape League teams have had to deal with some significant early-season weather issues, Chatham, coached by John Schiffner, the winningest coach in league history, has bounded out to a quick 7-1 start and taken a sizeable lead in the Eastern Division standings.

Boston College freshman righthander Mike Dennhart has played a key role for the Anglers, working 12 scoreless innings in his first two starts, while the Vanderbilt twosome of sophomore righthanders Russell Brewer (1-0, 1.50, 2 SV) and Taylor Hill (2-0, 1.13, 1 SV) have fortified the bullpen, striking out 20 between them in 14 innings. Overall, the Anglers have posted a 2.19 ERA, and the team’s pitching staff was expected to be bolstered soon with the return of North Carolina sophomore righty Matt Harvey, whose Cape debut was delayed by UNC’s participation in the College World Series. Harvey is projected to be one of the early selections in the 2010 draft.

To remain No. 1 in the Top 25, the Anglers have had to stave off a hot start by the Forest City Owls, which set a Coastal Plain League record with its fast 20-2 start. The Owls had already clinched the CPL’s Western Division first-half title, and have been getting significant seasons to date from Wofford freshman outfielder Konstantine Diamaduros (.387-2-20), North Carolina State freshman first baseman Pratt Maynard (.365-1-19) and SIU-Edwardsville junior righthander Spencer Patton (3-0, 1.12, 32 IP/8 BB, 52 SO).

We’ll rank the top 25 summer college league teams every Tuesday or Wednesday from 20-plus leagues around the country, and here’s our early take on the top teams in Week Two (last week’s ranking noted in parentheses).

Dawgs get bitten on Bark in the Park Night

From Summer Ball News Source
WINTER PARK-The Diamond Dawgs returned home Monday night to battle the Clermont Mavericks with their confidence soaring after handling the Sanford River Rats the night before. Unfortunately, the first matchup between the Mavs and the Dawgs did not play out like Winter Park would have hoped.

On Bark in the Park Night at Harold Alfond Stadium at Harper-Shepherd Field, the Clermont Mavericks got the bats going early and often to down the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs 11-4.

Manager Kenne Brown came away impressed in his first look at the defending champs.

“They’re a good ball club. They play hard and they’re well-coached.”

The Mavericks wasted little time, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Winter Park starting pitcher, Ryan Fern (USC Upstate), started the game with back-to-back walks and a hit batter to load the bases with nobody out.

Tyrone Wethers (New Orleans) scored Clermont’s first run of the game on a wild pitch. Tyler Benzel (Louisiana-Lafayette) then grounded out to short to score Clermont’s second run. Evan Stermer (Palm Beach CC) then followed suit with an RBI groundout to second base. Without registering a hit, the Mavericks were on top 3-0.

The Diamond Dawgs battled back to score two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After Anthony Figliolia (UCF) reached on a fielder’s choice, Jeff Moyer (Palm Beach Atlantic) ripped a double to send Figliolia to third. Figliolia scored a throwing error by the right fielder, which also allowed Moyer to advance to third. Brett Richardson (Murray State) tacked on the second Winter Park run of the inning with an RBI single to left field.

Unfortunately for the Diamond Dawgs, Winter Park was shut out through the next five innings. Clermont starter Charles Prano (Lake Sumter CC) was dealing all night, going seven strong innings and only allowing two runs on six hits.

For the Diamond Dawg starter, Fern, it was either feast or famine throughout his six innings of work. In the first, third, and sixth innings combined, Fern gave up seven runs on five hits, two walks, and three hit batters. During the second, fourth, and fifth innings, he gave up zero runs on one hit, no walks, and no hit batters.

When Fern worked ahead of hitters, he was nearly perfect. However, when he fell behind in counts and allowed hitters to reach base with free passes, Clermont made him pay.

“If you work ahead of every hitter, no matter what kind of stuff you have, you’re going to be successful,” said Brown. “He’s [Fern] got some good stuff, and once he learns how to put it all together, he’s going to be stellar.”

The Diamond Dawgs tacked on a run in the seventh inning on a Matt Crump groundout to cut the deficit to 7-3, but the Mavericks scored two off of Chris Roman in the eighth inning and two off of David Edwards (James Madison) in the ninth to put the game away.

Clermont’s Tim Dye was swinging a hot bat all night for the Mavericks, going 5 for 5 with three singles, a double, and a triple. For the Diamond Dawgs, Taylor Oldham (Covenant) kept his hot-streak alive, going 3 for 5 with three singles.

Coach Brown is starting to mold his team into shape. It’s just little things now that must be altered in order to make this team a contender night in and night out. As Kenne Brown says, “It’s little things against the game, not the opponent, that mold good teams to great.”

Make no mistake about it; the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs are a good team.

The Diamond Dawgs will resume action on Wednesday night as they battle the Clermont Mavericks again in Winter Park. First pitch is slated for 7:00.

Late inning rally puts DeLand past Leesburg

From Summer Ball News Source
Derek Luciano (UCF) went 3 for 4 with two base hits and a RBI double on Monday to lead the league-dominating DeLand Suns to a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory over the homestanding Leesburg Lighting at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg.

DeLand began its charge in the ninth inning on the short end of a 1-0 score. William Gordan (Southern Polytechnic) reached first on an error by third baseman, Nick Aranas (USC-Aiken) to begin the rally, then scored on Luciano’s double to tie the game. The Suns secured what would prove to be the winning run when Austin Chubb (Manatee CC) singled to plate Luciano.

“In the ninth, the 75-footer just happened to play on Nick and happened to hurt us,” said Lightning manager Frank Viola. “But it was a very good ball game. We had two outstanding pitchers go against us, and they battled.”

Lightning pitcher Lindsey Caughel (Stetson) worked five innings, striking out four and allowing just three hits.

In the second inning, it looked like the Suns would record their first runs of the game, but the Lightning escaped a bases-loaded jam when Caughel induced Alejandro Sanchez (Bethune Cookman) to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Lightning picked up a slim lead in the sixth with a base hit by Aranas to score Mark Stewart (SCAD).

In the sixth, Eric Katzman (Michigan) made his Lightning debut when Viola used him to relieve Caughel. In just two innings, Leesburg’s new kid on the block struck out four.

“He is going to be a big addition,” Viola said. “Today, we just wanted to get his feet wet. He’ll be part of the starting rotation and will get his first start on Saturday.”

The Suns set up to take the lead in the seventh but were quickly shut down. With runners on first and third, the Lightning made a key defensive play by shortstop Nick DelGuidice (Florida Atlantic), who grabbed a line drive, then fired to first to catch Luciano heading back to first.

Again in the eighth inning, it seemed as through the Suns would take the lead with runners on first and second. Eric Doty (Polk CC) relieved Kyle Moeder (Central Florida CC) and delivered the strikeout that would shut down the Suns for the third time in the game.

“First eight innings, we battled,” Viola said. "Lindsey gutted out five good innings. Eric Katzman, who is going to be a beautiful addition, pitched two-thirds of a good innings. We had a questionable call on the shortstop and obstruction, but we came through with that. But it was a very good ball game. They battled.”

After the Suns’ rally in the top of the ninth, the Lightning went out quietly in order.

The Lightning will face the Clermont Mavericks at East Ridge High School Tuesday night. The Lightning will then take on the Sanford River Rats at The Villages High School baseball complex on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.

Spitaels, Kadish named GLSCL players of the week

From Summer Ball News Source
DELAWARE, Ohio – Through one week of play in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, Anderson’s Reid Spitaels (Bethel College) has found himself atop the league rankings in batting average, doubles and runs batted in. He, along with Cincinnati’s Ian Kadish (Marshall University), has earned GLSCL Player of the Week honors for their efforts this past week.

Spitaels, who is in his second season with the Servants (1-6), has lined nine hits in 19 at bats through five games this season. His .467 average leads the league, as does his nine RBIs and five doubles. He also ranks second in slugging percentage (.737) and on base percentage (.542).

This past spring with the Pilots, Spitaels led the Mid-Central Conference (NAIA) with his .458 batting average. He also had 54 RBIs and 52 runs scored in 53 games. Of his 82 hits, 26 were for extra bases.

Kadish, meanwhile, led the Steam this past week with a 1-1 record and an earned run average of 1.64. In 11 innings of work, he surrendered just two earned runs while striking out seven batters. He also held his opponents to three hits for a .083 batting clip.
