CEDAR CITY, Utah - May 19 - Southern Utah's Nick Freitas has been named The Summit League Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Oral Roberts' Brian Van Kirk, after a strong week in which the junior made a run on a couple of records at SUU. The award is Freitas' first of the year and fourth for a Thunderbird.
Freitas put some fresh ink on the history books of Southern Utah by moving into No. 3 all-time in home runs during a season, increasing his season total to 15 after four home runs during the week. The junior also recorded four stolen bases during the four-game series with Oakland University to move within one of the all-time single-season stolen base mark set in 2006. In all, Freitas led the team in home runs (four), hits (ten), total bases (23), slugging percentage (.920) and stolen bases (4-of-4) as the Thunderbirds secured the No. 2 seed going into The Summit League Baseball Tournament
Southern Utah will open the tournament with a 3:00 p.m. matinée against Western Illinois on Thursday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla.

The Beltway Blue Caps of the Clark Griffith League have recently signed Michael Sweeney from Gettysburg College. Sweeney is a sophomore pitcher from Bethesda, MD. He finished the regular season 2-3, with a 5.74 era in 47 innings of work.
Doane Star Signs With Laramie
Mike Mendenhall will feel right at home this summer. The Doane College star and Laramie, WY high school standout will be playing for the Laramie Colts this summer. Simply put, Mike had an outstanding season for the Tigers. He lead the team in just about every major offensive category. He hit .429, with 3 homers and drove in 22 runs. He scored 40 times, and also had 3 triples on the year. Last week, Mike was also named to the GPAC All-First Team Award List.
Southern Ohio Signs Two From Penn State
The Southern Ohio Copperheads of the Great Lakes League have signed Calvin Grumley and Bobby Jacobs. Both are true freshman for the Nittany Lions.
If you just go by era, Calvin has had a tough year. The Johnsonburg, PA native has an 8.17 era in 25.1 innings, but I know that he has gained valuable expierence this season. Bobby is a catcher from West Chester, PA. He is currently 3 for 12, with 2 doubles this season.

Heckathorn Picks Up Award

MACON, Ga.--Sophomore Kyle Heckathorn has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week by the conference office Monday morning. Heckathorn tied the KSU Division I record with 13 strikeouts against Jacksonville last Thursday night.
Heckathorn went seven innings against the Dolphins, allowing just one run on five hits. Nine of the final 12 outs the Ringgold, Ga., native recorded was via strikeout. Hollis Signs With Belleview
The Belleview Bulldogs of the Florida Collegiate Baseball League have signed Jordan Hollis from Santa Fe CC. Jordan is a freshman catcher from Jacksonville, FL. Jordan finished the year batting .331. He scored 27 times and drove in 26 runners. Hollis drew 25 bases on balls, and struck out 22 times.
Swinson Named ACC POW

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland sophomore right-handed pitcher Scott Swinson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week it was announced by the league Monday.
Swinson, an Ellicott City, Md. native, capped the second 30-win season in school history last Tuesday at Delaware by tossing the sixth no-hitter in the program's history and the first solo no-hitter since John Rayne against Virginia in 1992. Swinson's no-hitter was the first solo and shutout no-hitter by a Terp since 1972, when Rich Fillings did so against Clemson.
Swinson struck out a career-high 10 batters in the Terps' 4-0 victory, allowing only three base runners on two walks and a hit batsman. The win was Swinson's fifth of the season, giving him five on the season to finish with the most on the team. The victory was also Swinson's second complete-game victory of the year and the first complete-game shutout by a Maryland pitcher since Ben Pfinsgraff against UMBC in 2004.
Kevin Biringer was the last Terp to win ACC Pitcher of the Week honors, doing so in February 2007.
North Carolina's Tim Fedroff was named the ACC Player of the Week.

Beetles Sign Three

Comerota Signs With Clovis
In keeping with the theme of former Texas Collegiate League players signing elsewhere, Jimmy Comerota (Rice) has signed on to play for the Clovis Outlaws of the California Collegiate Baseball League. Jimmy is a red-shirt sophomore from Missouri City, TX. He is currently batting .285, with 39 runs scored and 22 runs batted in. He has also stolen 11 bases this season. In 2006, Jimmy played for the Weatherford Wranglers, and in 07, he was a member of the Duncanville Deputies squad.
Richburg Signs With Lodi
The Lodi Grape Sox have signed Chris Richburg from Texas Tech. Chris is a junior outfielder from Lubbock, TX. He currently leads the Red Raiders with a .376 batting average. He has also hit 2 homers and drove in 18 runners this season. Chris was a member of the Wichita Falls Roughnecks this past summer.
Marshals Sign Talented Pitcher
The Mckinney Marshals of the TCL have signed Justin Freeman from Kennesaw State University. Justin is a junior pitcher from Macon, GA. He is having an outstanding season for the Owls. Justin in 4-3, with a 3.23 era in 47.1 innings of work. He has given up 45 hits, walked 16, and stuck out 56 batters. He is also sporting a very respectable 1.29 whip. One of the highlights of his season came on March 21 against Belmont, when he struck out 13 batters. Several of my sources are telling me that Justin's draft stock is rising, so his stay in Mckinney might not be a very long one.

Phegley Named As Johnny Bench Award Semifinalist

Twelve ACBL players were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District baseball teams. Mark Angelo (Blazers, Bucknell), Brian Ernst (Rockies, Penn State), Steve Gabel (Catz, Penn), Kyle Higgins (Pilots, Monmouth) and Matt Maher (Robins, FDU) were selected to the District 2 first team. First team selections will be forwarded for Academic All-America honors.
Burg Pitching Well For The Saints

(Rochester, MN) St. Scholastica’s Peter Burg, who will pitch for the Rochester Honkers this summer, reached the 10-win plateau Thursday, May 8th, versus Northland College in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament.
Burg threw six innings, giving up just one on four hits, in the Saints’ 14-1 rout of the Lumberjacks. He struck out eight in the contest, and worked his record to 10-0 in 11 starts this season. He has thrown five complete games this year, and has lowered his ERA to 2.35. He has also recorded 59 strikeouts in 65 innings.
Behind Burg’s efforts, the Saints finished the regular season 29-4, and claimed the regular season UMAC title with a 17-1 record in conference play. They will play in the tournament’s semi-finals Friday night.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express is excited to announce the signing of California pitchers Steven Moranda and Robert Alcala.
Steven Moranda (RHP) comes to Moose Jaw from Clovis, CA. Moranda, 6’2 195lbs, is currently attending Fresno City College. As of May 9th, he is 7-1 with a 3.06era. He’s appeared in 14 games, starting 11. In 672 innings, he’s racked up 64 strikeouts, walked 21, and allowed an opposition batting average of .236. His wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts are the second highest on the team.
“Steven works from 86-90mph and gives us a strong arm for our rotation”, Millers General Manger Cory Olafson. “He has great control and keeps batters guessing”.
Robert Alcala (LHP) attends Fresno City College with Moranda, and hails from Madera Ranchos, CA. Standing 5’10 and weighing 170lbs, Alcala has put up great numbers this season. As of May 9th he’s 2-0 with a 3.46era. He’s appeared in 15 games, starting seven. In 44.2 innings he’s struck out 59 and walked 15, allowing an opposition batting average of .253.
“Robert gives us a quality starter from the left side on the mound. He has the ability to log a lot of innings, and finishes off batters as his stats from school show”, Olafson said.
Moranda was named to the Central Valley Conference’s First team All Conference team, while Alcala was named to the Second team All Conference team.
Both are expected to be in Miller black and yellow for the season opener May 31st in Swift Current.

Wisconsin Adds Two More Catchers To Roster

(WAUSAU, WI) Catchers Geoff Klein and Carson Vitale will be working behind the plate this summer for the Wisconsin Woodchucks. Klein (left) is a sophomore at Santa Clara University while Vitale (right)is a sophomore at McLennan Community College. The ‘Chucks open up the 2008 season in Eau Claire on May 29th.
Klein is a 6’4”, 185 pound catcher/infielder from Huntington Beach, California. He has started in 44 games this spring and is hitting .314 for the 32-18 Broncos. Klein has 12 doubles, three home runs, and 31 runs batted in. The Broncos are in third place in the West Coast Conference, behind nationally ranked San Diego (#8) and Pepperdine (#14). As a high school senior in 2006, Klein was the Goldenwest League’s Most Valuable Player and was named to the All-California Interscholastic Federation First Team.
Vitale is hitting .317 for the McLennan Community College Highlanders. A native of British Columbia, Canada, Vitale has displayed his gap-hitting power this spring as he leads the team in doubles with 20. At 6’2”, 225 pounds he was a two-time Top Catcher at the Canadian High School Nationals.

The Bellingham Bells of the WCCBL have signed Kyle Boe from Skagit Valley CC. Boe is a sophomore outfielder. He is currently batting .299/.433/.403. He has hit 9 doubles, 2 homers, and 23 runs batted in.

Current Terp-Future Oriole Throws No-Hitter

NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore Scott Swinson threw the sixth no-hitter in Maryland baseball history, striking out a career-high 10 batters as the University of Maryland baseball team defeated Delaware, 4-0, in its season finale to end the season with 30 wins. It is the only the second 30-win season in school history.

Brazos Valley Signs Three JC Players
The Brazos Valley Bombers of the Texas Collegiate League recently signed three local Juco players. Nick Anders (Temple College), Zach Gricher (Navarro JC), and Jeff Sciba (Hill College) will all don the Bombers uniform this summer.
Finding information on the TCL has been very difficult since the league does not seem fit to return emails or update their site. If the TCL wants to be considered a top-notch league, they have to improve their website and improve the flow of information. I am not trying to harp on or downgrade the TCL, but it's my home league, and I just don't know if I want to attend any games this summer. Several of my friends here have been quietly speculating on just how many games will actually be played in the TCL this season, or if they will actually finish the season. Only time will tell.......

He hasn't seen action yet this season, but will be counted on to lead and groom the pitching staff for Sullivan. Matt was also a high school star at Delaware Valley H.S.

Rebel shortstop Tim Ferguson didn’t get many swings in the weekend series against Auburn, but the ones he got counted for a lot as the infielder was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Ferguson hit a 3-run walk-off home run against Auburn on Friday night in his only at bat to give the Rebels a win in the series opener and set the stage for the Rebels to win the final home series in SEC play for the 2008 season. The Beaumont, Texas, native entered the game in the eighth inning as a defensive substitute before making his one at bat in the game count.
Ferguson hit .500 for the weekend and did not commit a single fielding error at shortstop as he helped the Rebels to the series win over the Auburn Tigers.
He is the third Rebel to earn Freshman of the Week honors this season as Matt Smith and Drew Pomeranz also earned the Weekly Honor earlier this season. Five Rebels have garnered weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference this season as Lance Lynn and Scott Bittle have both been named Pitcher of the Week selections this season as well.
The Rebels will return to action this Thursday when Ole Miss will close out the regular season on the road at Kentucky. First pitch in Friday’s game is set for 5:30 p.m. CDT and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net in the state of Mississippi.

He has hit 4 homers, scored 38 runs and knocked in 44 rbi's. He has struck out 19 times and drew 27 bases on balls as well.
John is a sophomore infielder from Adrian, MI. He is an outstanding student in the classroom, as he was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team in 2007. On the field this season, he is batting .108 in 37 at-bats. He has also driven in 6 runners this year.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Sophomore Kevin Nieto has been selected MAAC baseball Player of the Week, while freshman Chad Salem was named Rookie of the Week as released this afternoon by the conference office. Green Bay Inks Four More

(GREEN BAY, WI) The Green Bay Bullfrogs announced the additions of Jon Karcich, Jon Gulbransen, Nick Rice and Matt VandenHeuvel to their roster for the upcoming 2008 season.
Karcich is a sophomore starting infielder at Santa Clara University in California. He currently leads the Broncos in batting average at .356, home runs with 10 and, RBI with 42. As a freshman last season Karcich started all 54 games, hit 12 doubles, four home runs and had 30 RBI on the year. A 2006 graduate of Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, Calif, he was named first-team Co-Player of the Year in the WCAL as well as being named the San Francisco Chronicle and San Mateo Times Player of the Year.
Gulbransen is a true freshman at Valparaiso University in Indiana. The 6’1” left-hander is a graduate of Fox Valley Lutheran High School in Appleton. In a reserve role this season for the Crusaders, he is currently hitting .321 and in 12 appearances on the mound he has struck out 36. A four-year letter-winner in high school, he was named a two-time All-State selection, a four-year All-Valley 8 Conference selection and twice earned Valley 8 Conference Player of the Year honors. He set school records in career wins (29), strike outs (407), runs batted in (113), hits (128), doubles (38), and earned run average (2.63).
Rice is a true freshman at Southern Illinois University. The 6’6” left-hander is a graduate of Tremper High School in Kenosha, WI. He has made 10 appearances this season for the Salukis and currently posts a 2-1 record. Rice was named the Wisconsin Gatorade Player-of-the-Year as a senior in 2007.
VandenHeuvel was a member of the Inaugural Bullfrogs roster last season where he posted a record of 4-2. The left-hander transferred this past fall to the University of North Alabama where he recently finished the season with a 4-3 record and was second on the Lions pitching staff with 56 strikeouts.
Larson Is An Academic Star

IRVINE, Calif. --- Outfielder Francis Larson (Yorba Linda/Esperanza HS) was voted to the ESPN the Magazine Division VIII All-Academic first team. Larson, a sophomore majoring in philosophy, has helped to power the Anteaters to a 31-12 overall record. Larson is first on the team with six home runs, second with 33 RBI and 12 doubles and third with 52 hits. He is also tied for first with nine multiple-RBI games and has reached base safely in 21 of the last 23 games.
Larson is a five-time Dean's List member and was a Big West Scholar-Athlete as a freshman. In order to be eligible for the award a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career and must be at least a sophomore academically and have completed at least one full year at their current school.
UNC-Charlotte Wins

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers continued their hot home ways by holding visiting Presbyterian to just four hits and winning their sixth straight contest by defeating the Blue Hose 11-3 Monday evening at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in college baseball action. Summer Ball News and Notes
**Michael Maples pitched 1.1 innings yesterday. He allowed 2 unearned runs. Michael will be playing for the Fuaquier Gators this summer.
